Staff Resource Planning Using MS Project

Hi All,

I have been tasked with creating a site staff resource programme by my employer.

I am relatively new to planning and am hoping someone could provide me with suggestions on how to efficiently create a programme for staff resources using MS Project.

The objective of the programme is to view working time against non productive time to assign excess capacity to jobs.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

How to see (explore) the source of linked field.

E
Evgeny Z. 👤 Member for 18 years 4 months

I am just playing around with Linked fields in Ms project (Paste Special => Paste Link). This seems to be quite a powerful feature especially taking into account, that one can link both within file as well as even to outside file (e.g. even to Excel) .

However the big problem is that it seems to impossible to see where the field is linked to. One can see, that there is a linked field (little triangle and “Linked Fields” flag), but I found no way to see, where it is actually linked to

Any idea how I can see it?

"Must Start on Particular Day" Constraint

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way of getting a 5 day task to start on the first working day of a week, regardless of the day it's predecessor finishes. For example, Task A finishes on a Thursday, then I want task B to start on the Monday, not the Friday.

I know I could put a lag in the link, but this only works until I update the schedule and task A may move.

I have also considered setting up a calandar that shows Monday only as a work day, then adding in a milestone with this calendar, which in turn drives task B which would do the job.

Excel-like features of MS Project

E
Evgeny Z. 👤 Member for 18 years 4 months

Dear all,

I wonder whether MS Project (I use 2007) has the following Excel like feature:

I want that I would setup several parameters (cells) and then when I change them, then some other parameters of tasks, resources etc would change depending on the parameters of these cells, based on certain formula

E.g. Say I have a lot of resources, which have specific hourly rates, but these hourly rates are dependent on a few other parameters (e.g. currency, country perceived risk etc).

MS Project Add-in for Project Portfolio Analysis and Reporting

I am looking for a solution that provides multi-project  analysis and reportiing capabilities using Microsoft Project Server 2007 data files, similar to what is available in Primavera.  This involves opening multiple projects, up to and including the entire portfolio (currently between 20-30 projects, and 20K to 30K total number of tasks) and performing analysis based in selected critieria, based on changing business needs.  F
