Dear Richard
My name is Athol Swaine (PP member '26743') and am currently living near Bristol. I am contacting you in regard to this position the details of which are appended to this email. My updated CV is attached and I would be grateful if you would consider me for the position.
In my current role I am responsible for leading the project planning, cost and controls for the Graphite Programme at EDF Existing Nuclear, Gloucester. This is a very big nuclear programme to develop the necessary regulatory safety cases for extending the life of the Companies British fleet of AGR Nuclear Power Stations.
My relationship with EDF Existing Nuclear / British Energy has been ongoing since my first contract with the Company in 2006/07 when I worked on a large M&E/civils project to install a process to encapsulate intermediate level radioactive waste in concrete / drums for storage on site i.e. until such could be transferred to a national nuclear repository. The project however, was terminated early by British Energy due to non-performance by the principal contractor. It in turn led to substantial claims by British Energy, which went to Arbitration. In 2008 I was fortunate to be contracted back to British Energy as a member of the claims team to support the British Energy case i.e. responsible for doing the as built programme, delay analysis, witness statement from a planning / controls perspective.
Whilst working for Wessex Water, I was responsible for supporting the Special Projects Division for Project Controls and Planning. Examples of the type of projects undertaken and where I played a significant role, were:
a) Mined Flood Alleviation Tunnel under Bristol's CBD (mining and civil) - capex £12 mill
b) New Water Treatment Works south of Taunton with capacity of 85Hl pd (civil and M&E) - capex £30 mill
c) New Sewage Treatment Works south of Taunton (civil and M&E) - capex £10 mill
d) Dam wall refurbishment project at Sutton Bingham (civil and marine) - capex £10 mill.
(Incidentally all of these projects were completed on due date and on budget).
My current contract with EDF ends 31st Dec 2012. Whilst I understand that they may wish to extend my contract next year, I see this as an excellent opportunity to move forward with my career. My existing rate at EDF is £55 per hour and should I be successful in this application I would not expect a higher rate but would obviously welcome any assistance with living out costs. I am therefore negotiable on rate and in terms of my current contract with EDF have to provide a notice period of 2 weeks.
I trust you will therefore find my CV of interest and thank you again for your time in assessing my application. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Kind Regards
Athol Swaine
