Wednesday 21st September 2011, 10:00 to 10:30 ”THE ROAD MAP TO WORLD CLASS PROJECT CONTROLS” by Chris Carson, PSP, CCM, PMP, Corporate Director of Project Controls, Alpha Construction and Engineering Corporation and Planning Planet Senator and Chief U.S. Editor for the Accreditation Scheme The key to successful projects and programs and viable project management is a strong and effective project controls effort. This effort is the result of a structured approach to developing a planning and scheduling culture in the organization through adoption of industry best practices, recruiting, training, and mentoring of project controls personnel, and maintaining state of the art competencies among all levels of personnel. Few organizations can take the time to help their project controls staff to work their way through technical and practical education, so a large part of the industry learns on the job. This on the job training is completely dependent on the ability, availability, and competence of senior staff mentoring. Nowhere is this demonstrated more than the proliferation of forums and groups in industry associations where all levels of practitioners are asking for help from anyone who will bother to respond. Planning Planet has already taken the leadership role as the international center for planning and project controls experts and with the support of our community of practitioners and employers, is now positioned to provide the world class project controls guidance through the development of the Guild and the accreditation scheme. This roadmap will provide a career path for all levels of project controls staff, guided by some of the leading experts in the world, and the other initiatives will provide much needed direction for project controls managers who are trying to set up their own world class project controls group. This presentation will address what it takes to build and manage a world class organization, and how Planning Planet provides the roadmap to achieve that goal. |

Wednesday 21st September 2011, 11:00 to 11:30 ”BIM CASE STUDY: THE USE OF SYNCHRO IN A SCHEDULE DRIVEN MOVEMENT SIMULATION FOR A HIGH PRECISION PROJECT” by Katarzyna Jasinska, Synchro / PrimaFrance On the construction site work is seldom accurate by the minute. But what if construction and maintenance is done by robots? Then time and space constraints become crucial criteria. A robot won’t move a millimeter more than it’s programmed to, rendering prior clash detection an important part of project planning. The presentation will cover the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to the problem described above. |

Wednesday 21st September 2011, 14:00 to 14:30 ”LINEAR SCHEDULING FOR RAILWAY MAINTENANCE WORK” by Dipl.-Ing. Hubert Geier, Linear Project Gmbh Railway maintenance work is usually performed in short possession periods over night or on weekends. The works to be performed are based on standard work processes and are highly repetitive. Many of them are performed in different places in parallel. The biggest challenge is to finish the work in time so that next morning trains can run as scheduled to minimize disturbances in traffic. The case study opens a way for automated planning using standard processes that are pre-calculated and have attached resource assignments. Hindrances such as crossings along the track are automatically reflected in the work rates. The applied schedule algorithm supports parallel work in order to reduce the production time on one side and avoids clashes and collisions caused by overlapping tasks on the other. The result is presented as time a dynamic chainage diagram including also logistic aspects like train runs to support the construction side. During execution, the project is 'controlled' every 3 hours in order to check performance against the goals of the project. This is shown based on simulations, where data are recorded externally and sent based on XML files to the planner. The progress can be viewed in distance Gantt charts and S-Curves, but also a prototype is presented showing progress and the construction situation in Google maps. |
