Main Purpose of the Job:
An engineering degree qualified (or equivalent) Construction Planner with hands-on rail or metro construction delivery experience who is interested in progressing in our project management and consultancy services team. We are looking for people with the ability to make a difference, pro-actively define and manage risks and influence others to deliver successfully. This opportunity would suit someone with contractor experience, who is looking to move to the front end of programmes. Candidates must have significant skills and experience as a rail (or similar transportation) construction planner working in a multi-disciplinary consultancy / contracting team or on behalf of our clients in project teams. You will be required to develop strategic and tactical plans of work in all stages of the project lifecycle using a variety of typical tools, including the use of Primavera P6 (and other Oracle products), Bentley Microstation (and other Bentley products),Navisworks, TiLoS, Synchro etc. Where some proficiency is recognised, training will be provided for other software products.
Interested candidates should be progressing to or have achieved chartered status with a relevant professional body. You will be largely UK focused, based out of our London office. Opportunities may also arise to work in other areas of the UK and possibly overseas. Candidates must have strong technical capability, excellent communication and project management skills, and be willing to take on new challenges.

Principal Accountabilities:
- Set (or support the set up of) the standards and working methods for the construction planning function across an entire project.
- Support the development of a BIM-centric construction planning team, providing expertise and guidance as required to construction planning and project staff.
- Support the development and implementation of the RTA BIM Strategy in line with the PB UK BIM Strategy, ensuring relevant aspects of people development, as well as, process and toolset enhancements are provided to meet the requirements of the UK Government BIM Maturity Model and associated industry best practises and standards (BS1192:2007, PAS1192:2012 etc).
- Develop and maintain construction processes and programmes, at both strategic and tactical levels.
- Co-ordinate the construction planning and scheduling of a variety of construction activities within one project or across a number of projects, including identification of testing and commissioning / deliver into operation activities.
- Define forecasts for labour, plant and materials, enabling optimisation of resources.
- Create suitable project logistics and traffic management strategies.
- Development of Constructability Assessments for use by the project team and clients in defining construction approaches.
- Provide support to management for all construction planning functions ensuring that issues within the construction programme are highlighted and understood.
- Give appropriate construction planning advice and direction to project staff, consultants, contractors and clients.
- Coordinate the availability of 3D CAD Models to enable dynamic use of the design data for construction planning application: 4D/5D/6D modelling etc.
- Contribute to the engineering input to multi-disciplinary railway engineering (design and consultancy) projects.
- Facilitate effective planning of the works within the project team.
- Deliver regular progress / programme updates and input to project reports.
- Deliver information regarding changes and delays that have impacted the programme on a period by period basis.
- Deliver necessary reports, to allow senior managers to direct the project appropriately.
- Provide specific programme outputs to support other project processes including ‘as built’ documentation.
- Ensuring all company safety, quality, environmental, commercial and project management procedures are followed as relevant to tasks undertaken, and especially in ensuring that the Rail Contractors Assurance Case is not compromised.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in relevant engineering or management discipline.
- Approaching Chartered or Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body
- 5+ years post degree / relevant technical experience in major construction or rail projects for junior roles.
- 10 to 15+ years post degree / relevant technical experience in major construction or rail projects for senior roles.
- Client or project delivery (design or construction) Rail, Metro or Transport experience an advantage.
- Proven ability to work successfully in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in a consultancy environment with good customer relationship and stakeholder management skills.
- Must be able to represent the “Plan” at all level within the organisation structure.
- Demonstrable capability and proven skills in the use of Primavera / Microsoft / other planning products (e.g. Primavera Project Management, Primavera Risk Analysis, Microsoft Project, Predict!), Bentley Microstation (and other Bentley products),Navisworks, TiLoS, Synchro etc to provide a capability to implement BIM techniques.
- Understand and has utilised Critical Path Analysis, Earned Value Techniques, and “Extension of Time” analysis techniques.
