I think youre referring to Progress Spotlight where you can update your progress against you data date. Any activities highlighted by progress spotlight will be updated automatically without extending dates.

U can use the "Schedule % complete" to show how much of the activitys baseline duration has been completed so far (till the data date).
U can make a copy of the schedule that u work on and assign a baseline to it, then update the schedule as per ur data date and ull find the "Schedule % complete".

Run the "update progress" under tools menu, enter the desired date when prompted and then click run.
