PMI and IPMA are different ways of skinning a cat.
The former evaluate knowledge, while the latter evaluate competence, at least once you are beyond the Level D certification. Each has its captive audience, national boundaries nonwithstanding.
In terms of popularity PMI is the choice outside of Europe but IPMA is intensifying its penetration in the emerging markets in Asia especially with so many branches set up recently or on the way to being incorporated.
PMI has more of its PMBOK available in the public domain and more easily accessable. The fees involved are more friendly to aspirants from third world countries, where such knowledge and competence are in real short supply. IPMA is working very hard in overcoming its current handicaps in those areas, at least from what I understood of the events taking place now in Asia.

Agreed, I have seen little that lets me believe that the IPMA (APM) and PMI have much dialogue between the two organisations. I undertand that the PMI has a college of scheduling, but have not yet been able to find out what they do - my emails dont seem to get through, or if they do the replies dont reach me. (I am an APM member- not a PMI member))
Personally I feel both organisations dont view Planning in the pivital role that I presume we all see it in. It seems to get burried in general project mgt. To me Planning is the key building block of all successful project mgt. I dont feel that either organisation gives full and proper recognition to the Specialist Planners. That is why Planning Planet is so important.
It should also be noted that the UK and US approaches are different and this is reflected in the different "Body of Knowledge" publications as well as the way they do business.
I havent seen much collaboration between the two. It may be there, I just havent seen it.

Also PMI has a college which has a very active forum which is open to public.
IPMA on the other hand are more clannish and have not such forum.
Perhaps more members should tell those members of IPMA to use this forum besides that of the www.ipma.ch website open to their members.

I think it is take your pick. Here in the UK the APM is probably the best route to use. They are inflential within the IPMA.
The USA is very much PMI, so I think it depends where you are working, and is your employer European or USA based.
I would hope that which ever route you choose that neither organisation is blind to the qualification route of the other.
