Hi Raj,



Do not confuse GPS ( Global positioning system) and GIS ( Geographical information systems). GPS tells you where you are, that is all. GIS is databases that hold all types of info, such as population densities, geographical terrain, minerals, political leanings, in fact any records you need to know. A typical instance is cars that have a combination of bothwhere you put in an address and the GIS will tell the GPS where it is, and in a combined effort they will navigate you there. Hope this describes it.



As a matter of of interest Gps was started in the 1980’s, at the time there was very limited forerunners of GPS mainly used at sea for navigational purposes, and you needed to input elevation and time/date manually, to get some answers. GIS is a computor programme and GPS a satelite based positioning system.

Hi Raj,



Once the Pipe line is distributed & oil/gas starts flowing through, then comes monitoring and control part that these days gets simulated by a GIS Data base. The total pipeline network is first digitized with respective attributes ,facilities such as compressor stations, liquids separation facilities, and heater(Pressure/Pipe Identifier/Site Info etc..).



This Digitization takes place with reference to the Satelite Images. Now after proper authantication, GPS points are fixed at regular intervals through the Pipeline network in real world.



What happens next is the simulation of both GPS Points, the respective cordinates & the GIS Data base in one platform. The pressure on pipelines at different intervals also stored in the database.



During the period of monitoring, as the whole network is stored in one data base, its absolutely like tracking fault points/pressure variations/heat etc.

Well, I just briefed abt the concept...theres a vast ocean of technology and developement involved in this.

Well thanks for these informations regarding GIS/GPS. I am working in this field since quite a some time.



As you insisted abt DBF...does it any thing related to Data base management system with Oracle & SQL?



A bit clarity would help. As I feel you might have expousure towards this field.

GPS is generally used for 3D seismic data aquisition. This data is used for Dynamic simulation of Oil & Gas column.I am not sure how is directly related to Pipeline project. I guess that it will be helpful in optimising pipeline route for full field developments.

Hi Again,



GPS is only a tool people use to find out where they are. The average citizen, does not have a clue, especially by co-ordinates, so this is the modern age, in the old days we had, levels, theodilites, compasses, and all kinds of other limited aids where you needed to know at least a bench mark, be it the sun, north pole, whatevever, fortunately most of yo guys have not been underground where you need Gyro compasse or at sea where you needed Sextant, fortunately this has all been replaced by GPS.



Just an observation, like spotting the sun through a Sextant, and having a clued-up nvigator.

I would suggest you study DBF, (Data Base Files), which GIS is based upon, as GIS is nothing new. GIS started somewhere in / or about 1993, and is the art of recording to databases as much geographical information as possible, ie population densities, mineral deposits, rainfall, geology, graveyards, etc. Today this technology, can guide you anywhere on the planet. In the original concept it was a tool to help engineers to select waste disposal site, where hospitals were required etc.



As a planner your function is to control projects, and as such the things you should be learning from GIS is does the project need anymore GIS info, and further, how to code your project, and to track it. One of the great things you learn from GIS is how to set filters

For creating a database of a crude oil pipeline project with GPS installations...



This is for monitoring and control of the GPS point network attached with the Pipe lines....

Thanks indeed for the reply.



Ha ha ha...Yep...I do have experiences in construction work of bridges & housing projects. In pipeline, I do have experiences in water & sanitation but not in oil/gas.



Thats the reason I asked for the activities as am involved in some GIS related work and one wbs presentation towards this was the requirement.

Start Filling Be cearefull this normally takes some time depended on the Route.





But please note this is just a quick guide You need to read te DWG & the Spec.





PS do you realy have so much experiance as what you claim you have.

The best method is a line of balance method for a pipeline constrcution.



It is easy for the rate of installation calcs and all understand it.
