On the filter menu, you can select the option of highlighting the activities selected.
Unfortunately there are no ways that you can change the format of the description text. You have a column indicating the acitvities you want to highlight. You can also use the pattern function on the bar menu to change the format of bars with coding values.

There is an icon called "progress spotlight" (it looks like a flashlight) once you press that icon, you can basically drag and drop it from the data date to anywhere you like it, for example, you want to highlight all the activities coming for the next two weeks, just drag that spot light 2 weeks from the data date and presto! all the activities within the next two weeks will be highlighted.
