Remember to make backups, although I believe the trick will only make available for you to see the common fields and might not clear the other values as when you delete activity codes it is better to play it safe until you find out.
I tried with a sample job that had 4 activity codes and defined only 2 for the group in an inverted order, it worked. I forgot to detach the job again to see if the other fields are still available and populated.

Sounds good and you are correct, the order of the codes rather than the values is what I am trying to change. Ill give it a go.

I understood you want to change the order of the activity codes and not the order of values.
Try the following:
1-Create an empty project group.
2-Define the activity codes under the project group in the order you want.
3-Add the original job as a member of the project group.
Always remember to keep backups.
