O&G opportunites.

Andrew,

It is hard to cross over especially when most Planning Control Managers say they welcome Planners from other areas to apply for jobs.

In practice they fall back to the people they know.

I believe it all comes down to accreditation. A subjet that is close to the heart of Planning Planet.

Until we can become fully accreditable we will suffer from this syndrome.

My last job in O&G was staffed by the Project Managers noddy dogs from previous projets. I was the only outsider and life was rough.

I do not know the area where you live, but one thing I tried was offering my services free for a couple of days to get a look at the way projects are run inside that particular company.

If you live close to a O&G site send a letter to the Head of Projects and not HR who will just bin your request.

You could also try for a trainee or assistant position where the company might give you a trial for a period with a review in say 1 or 2 months.

Whatever you decide good luck.

Hi Andrew,

I moved from Heavy Engineering/Defence to O&G and have a couple of tips for you.

1. Get a Thick Skin.

The planner will be blamed for everything even though he does NOT get invited to meetings or involved in decisions.

2. Shout Loud.

The only way a Planner can be noticed is to shout loudly and often as your Plans will not be reviewed or issued and certainly misunderstood.

3. Learn Project Management.

Your Project Manager will probably know less about Managing a Project than the Mail Delivery Guy so try to retain a bit of best practice. When the Audit Team arrives at least you will not be sacked.

Best regards,

Ron

By the way, try Oilcareers web site for O&G positions.

Dear Andrew,

The O&G companies have web site that are very detailed and most of the openings are posted on their website.

You need to determine your target companies and location around the world and then start applying online to vacancies they have.

Good luck,

Samer
