I want to learn and understand the process in import and export data from excel to p3 & vice versa. Can you email me the step-by-step process. I would like to explore more P3 since I am new with planning.
I exactly understand whats ur confusion is. The Activity ID tab adjacent to the Activity Codes tab can only be useful if you know and using import/export feature available in primavera.
In import/export feature one can import/export data on x-cel sheet in DBF or WK1 ....etc formats. This is done by the intelligence building of Activity IDs on x-cel sheet and configuring the IDs in Activity ID tab that when you import data in p.3 all the activities fall in relevant heads. When you are using import feature than you dont need Actvity codes to build.
Its appearing complex but once you have learned how to do it !than you may never use Activity Code approach. If you need to ask more; do please let me know.

Activity ID is an identifier and must be unique. To address a specific activity, youll have to do it by the ID.
Code is is a classification and identifies a group of activities. An activity may be classified by: Construction phase, compressor A, area B7, responsibility sub "XX". Later in reports you can analyze by area, phase, responsibility, equipment.
There is a speciality for P3 because it was written a time when harddisk space and memory was extremely expensive: Out of the activity id you can use up to ten digits for four codes where the first two are reserved for the project id.
Was this an answer to your question?

As per the P3 help, may I just reiterate a line in my previous posting, "Activity ID codes can be used for organizing and filtering data in the layout and in tabular reports and graphics." I think thats the whole point of that Activity ID Tab in relation to the Activity codes.
Try to have some exercise to know more on how it goes.

"The Activity ID tab enables you to classify activity IDs in ways that are meaningful within your project. For example, in a project that is part of a group, the first two characters of each activity ID are reserved for the SUBP (Project ID) code; this enables you to sort and summarize activities based on these codes.
Activity IDs can contain up to 10 alphanumeric characters, which can be divided into a maximum of four codes. Activity ID codes can be used for organizing and filtering data in the layout and in tabular reports and graphics."
Activity ID denotes a particular activity in your program, while the Activity Code refers to the coding system of your Activity ID for its usefulness as explained above.

Hi Fernand,
you may not get my point, even with activity code you can organize and filter data.

As Ferdinand said in 1st place,
you can use the Activity ID tab to create a prfix that will come in front of the automatic Activity Number
have a look at the APEX master project in P3 examples to see what Ferdinand and I mean
you can also use the Activity Alias to consolidate several Activity Codes together

Alexandre,
I am sorry I could not get your point, could you explain in more details?

OK then,
the Activity ID lets you consolidate several codes in 1 ID; then you will sort the activities by Activity ID and use these Activity ID to create links
thats the way I am doing in a 15000 activity long Oil and Gas project.

Hi Alexandre,
I do not mean activity ID in the column area, I mean activity ID tab in the activity code.

Thanks Ferdinand,
I read this script in P3 help, but what I mean if we use activity code which I always use it, what is the need to use activity ID?

Hi Mr. Moutaz,
Heres a script from the help content of P3:
Hope it explains its difference.
Regards,
Ferdinand
