problem starting P3 - Btrieve 6.15

If I remember correctly, the user (you) must have read/write (or total control?) of the directories where you installed P3OUT, P3WIN, PROJECTS, P3WORK. Also, I think you must add a "PATH" statment to your Windows. It is in P3’s setup manual under "Setup in a network environment".

It works with admin rights, not with user rights. So you’ll have to check together with your it for the rights a normal user has. Is there a restriction to use 16-bit applications? Check the WINDOWS event-log. It might be helpful.

Once again, thank you all very much for your comments.

i have now managed to obtain administrator rights for our network. Having signed back onto my PC as an administrator i have un-installed then re-installed P3, all works fine when signed on as admin, however, when i then sign back in as ’me’ i get the original Btrieve error,,, any ideas??

many thanks

There is no problem if you have your P3 files on a server. But as Paul wrote only with a short path or an alias.

The item that every employee has MSP I know from a previous employer. Quite a few big companies receive MSP as a give-away if they buy MS-Office - but in Germany there is a saying: everything what costs nothing is worth nothing.

By the way: If user needs a software for project management in oil&gas industry, since when this is a decision of IT-department?

It has been my experience that P3 is far more stable on XP than any other platform and very rarely crashes.

Due to its old architecture there are a few rules to follow which include:

1. Use DOS compliant paths, therefore all directories must be less than 8 characters without spaces.

2. Avoid long paths and map a network drive if necesary.

3. Work locally and back up to your corporate net work drive on a regular basis.

4. Load latest Service Pack, it is available from my web site under software.

5. Some pdf printers like Adobe should be set up with a a local port like C:\P3\P3OUT if you have problems printing.

thank you Gents,

i think your suggestion of local admin rights could sort ALOT of my current issues out. An annoying thing is that ALL company employees have MS Project and up unitl now all Projects/schedules have been centraly stored, basically letting any Tom, Dick or Sally have a free rein on them!! time to put a stop to this lunacy and get P3 (or P6,, one step at a time) on the scene!

once again, many thanks

For the location were I work we have an agreement with IT that we are responsible for Primavera. They just care of the SQL-Server (for P6) and the backup. You just need local admin rights on the pc.

Primavera local installation is by autorun (both P3 and P6). IT would just complicate.

Both sides feel comfortable with this solution.

Don’t let your IT run your job. P3 is perfectly stable under XP and Vista; perhaps you need the last patch for P3 3.1 (SP3). If you need a few arguments browse through the MS Project section of this forum!

To resolve this type of issue in the past I have renamed all the Btrieve file which if I remember correctly are the one beginning with “W32MK” and “WBTR” in the system directory. This effectively removes the current version of Btrieve. Say put a “X” in from of each file and then you can reinstate the files later if you wish by deleting any new files and removing the X.

I delete all the P3 program files and reload P3, which will also reload the correct version of Btrieve.

If this works then delete the old Btrieve files.

As far as I know, Btrieve Files are all included in the P3 CD itself. It is all located under Btrieve directory on the Installation CD and is bundled together with some other utilities provided as-is by Primavera. For XP OS, it should be at E:\Btrieve\Win32.(Assuming your CD drive is E:\) Most file if not all under this directory are created on your computer during installation. Btrieve files are normally being loaded once you start P3. My opinion is same as that of the others that it might have been overwritten or maybe deleted during uninstallation because some programs might also be using it and you might have just click "yes to all". Best way probably is to reinstall P3 again. BTW, only Versions 1 and 1.1 of P3 use the older version of Btrieve 5.0. All P3 versions starting from 2.0 to 3.1 SP3 use Btrieve 6.xx.

it’s a right access problem. Be sure that in the user profile that you use you have the adminstrator rights (read and write) and it won’t give you such error message.

Jon,

I did encounter the same, but the accidental solution I made (but not 100% sure) was: I install Suretrak, then after some time (2weeks) I install P3, then in works.

Also another case, was due to your P3 program conflicts with some of the drivers (*.inf or *.dll) installed in your PC (e.g. printer driver of Chinese language - example only). Therefore you can try to remove printer driver first, then install P3, then return driver.

It will take some time to figure out the real solution, so I suggest to reinstall your XP operating system in your PC after that install P3, then all other programs.

Give it a try, Good day...
