I am not sure what you mean by "copying the resource pool to the first project".
You create the pool as a separate file, then in the individual projects Tools, Resource Sharing to tell each of the projects to get their resources from the pool.
If there are custom fields in the resource sheet of the pool, they will be available in the projects provided that you use Tools, Organiser to get the fields from the pool.
This is necessary even if you have a sub-project inserted in a master project.
