Last week I started using my new PC with Vista, and with that Im also running MSP 2007 SP1. (12.0.6211.1000) MSO (12.0.6213.1000).
I must admit its behaving quite good:
- No data loss so far
- No crashes so far
- No conversion problems with 2003 mpps so far (even with a 6000-activity schedule)
- Most VBA programs worked in one go
- My 2003 Global.MPT (4.5Mb) works perfectly
The only point is that even with my new Intel 2GHz dual core and 2Gb RAM its a lot slower than MSP2003 on my three year old laptop; Both VBA execution and baseline saves take up to 10 times longer.
"told me to use MSP 2003 until they sort out all the bugs in 2007
I agree a good idea, or switch to something that is robust like Primavera.
The main issue at the moment seems to be importing/exporting to and form 2003, this is where I found
problems. Certainly if you are doing this make a back upp in 2003 before attempting to import into 2007. I think the Service patch has fixed some things.
You know what P.....s me off. Microsoft ask people to register but then do not tell them when these bugs pop up.!!!
There were issues with the outlining in MSP 2000 and 2003 , where if an indent was made it could not be outdented. I thought that they fixed this.
If you can stick with 2003 or even 2000 they both seem to be OK. As far as I can see 2007 does not offer much more for normal scheduling tasks.
I also lost data previous to this but this may have been down to a specific file.
Yesterday while I was working on a programme I opened up the the lower levels and they were all empty but all dates and bars were perfect.
This programme had 2,000 activites, I was alarmed to see that they all had vanished. Only the top levels remained, luckily I had saved this file so I had a back up.
I had a IT guy in to look at it and he has just told me to use MSP 2003 until they sort out all the bugs in 2007??
I realised that there are a lot of users of MS project out there who are not supported very well. I am just volunteering my solution. What we really need to do is for all of us to hit Microsoft with a complaint about their product.
I am willing to assist and in fact have already made contact with my local IT media over an earlier bug which scrambled data. After months of trying to get them to admit that it was a bug, as soon as my story was published; Microsoft responded to me and eventually issued a service pack. However, you seem to have experienced yet another bug. If you have time perhaps you could send me some details of the specific issue. The original scrambling bug was undoable, many people found that once their data was scrambled they had no other choice but to start again, re-enter all the data. You may have the same thing.
Unfortunately Microsoft’s attitude to their market, is that they are not competing with the "proper" Project Management software like Primavera. So they do not care if their software does not work properly.
I am a freelance consultant and have been forced to use Project mainly because my clients use it. The main problem with it is that because Microsoft do not see it as being used by professionals in the same way as say an accounting package. They can always sell another million copies to people who think that all they need to do to manage a project is to get MS Project and it will do the job for them !.
My point is that we can expect bugs in the software, as a result. I am not saying we should accept these. My recommendation is do some basic manual checks of calculations just in case. I believe that most professionals, if they can; and their employer allows it, should use something like Primavera.
Do you work for a large company who uses many Microsoft products ? If you do, get your IT department to deal with Microsoft and get it fixed.
Ive now downloaded the service pack - thanks for this. This is not one of the issues which the fix file claims is covered by the servicepack, but more than happy to give it a try!

Guys,
I have had this same problem in 98, 2000 and now 2003.
I think the cause in my case has always been due to interruptions on our company network.
I get over this by keeping files on my local drive and then saving copies back on to the network periodically.

Glad to have been of assistance.

There has been a problem with MSP 2007. Particularly when importing from older versions, then trying to save again in th eold version.
I had a battle with Microsoft over this issue last year.
They released a servicepack I believe.
Like all "retail" products that they sell, even if you register this does nto mean that they will lewt you know when there is a bug !!.
Check to see if you have the latest service pack
www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cec3e1e2-d802-4a03-bc…-
If you do then this sounds like yet another bug. Let me know if you do have the service pack or not

I have also had this problem. I am a new user to MP and it is the worst software to use.
Its not one bit user friendly and you have to go such a long way around filtering and grouping and they NEVER turn out the way you want them to look.

Yes this is a flaw in MSP. Copying and pasting data also causes such a problem.
