Import from WKS or DBF

To avoid the problem I am using an RA utility I found in internet, long time ago, that is making a matrix Activities/resouces.

Just push a bottom to import in excel and another to import in.

Very nice and usefull.

I came across this problem before. The answer is simple. Both DBF and WKS or WK1 have range. When you combine data or deleting data, the range changes. Although you might cut and pasted back but the range remain un-change as a result when you import you only imported the top end range of activities where your bottom half will not be imported.

By import/export to create the DBF, I can do some ’data combination’, like dates, WBS and codes value per activity. If by RA Excel, you’ll have 3 separate worksheets.

Don’t worry, this Activity.xls is available on CD also. The data connection is by RA.

That ’SDK’ Excel file is available on the installation CD!

I am agree, but look like the originator of this discussion had problems because was using excel.

Is true teh same file open after with access had all the records.

I remember there is limitation in Excel for number of row and column. It is not related to the export file since it is in DBF or WK1. (WK1 even more worst. DBF is better.)

Open DBF by Excel will be affected by Excel’s limitation, that’s why Access or other database software is better. Excel is spreadsheet type software, not database.

Exporting in excel a 5000 activities schedule in DB format I found out that the excel database was able to recognise only around 3000. I do not remember the exact number.

For this reason I switched directly to access and I have not again the same problem, and now the construction schedule is bigger.

I think is not excel limitation as it can work with around 65.000 rows, but when You start to work with the database capabilities of excel.

There is no limitation to XLS file format file. The limitation is depend of the file type, like WK1, WKS, etc.

Have You try to manipulate the exported file with access?

Excel database is limited in capacity, so it will be not able to read all the records.



In any case if You work with excel remind to save as DB3 format. Excel put as default DB4

My practice is export at least 2 activities from P3 into dbf. Open dbf by Excel, modify the record. If any addition row, insert the new between the first and last export records (the range will be increased auto). Then save the dbf and ready for import.

For WKS or WK1, there is some limitations, the export result cannot more than certain row number.



For dbf, this limitation seems not exceed. However, the import row is bounded by a named range. If you have rows not in the ranged, these record will not be imported.
