managing multiple projects in P3

Alex,

1. both Primavera Corp and Paul E. Harris describe this resource setup as "hierarchical"; I agree that PM4/5 or AstaDev PowerProject resource setup, or MS Project Server Resource Breakdown Structure look "more hierarchical"

2. to answer directly Mimoun’s question: can you imagine any piece of software easily understand that the same "Mimoun" will cost less or more depending the project he is working on?

Should I have to prepare resources to work that way, I would create several resources with quite similar names, e.g. Mimoun-South at $200 and Mimoun-North at $150, and use the so called hierarchical resource functionnality to make sure that the "real" resource Mimoun is not overallocated.

This would work the same between different tasks in the same project or between different projects in the same group.

I hope this will help

Alexandre,

Thanks for the clarificiation, but I think this resource setup is not a true hierarchical structure, especially in Resource Leveling it become impossible to level these resource base one the structure and this is where the original question is based on. Can you share with us how to manage this in a multip projeect environment. Thanks in advance

Cheers

Alex Wong,

Happy New Year ...

Regarding hierarchical resources in P3, you should read the technical litterature about it; look at P3 Planning and Control Guide, pages 109 and 110: use a wildcard to create hierarchical resources, as follows

EPG* = All programmers - employee

EPG1* = Sr. programmers - employee

EPG1CTM = Conrad T. Mayer sr. programmer

hello

Thanks for your replies, actually i have two accounts, i meant to use one for regular questions, and the other for not political correct question like asking for jobs, or moaning about our company

But I had made a stupid mistake, by posting a normal question (with my real name) in my not normal account!

Anyway, what are the advantages (if any) of using P5 au lieu of P3 in managing a single project

mimoune

is this your second account?? ...

Anyway our french friend give you a solution in P5 not P3 where there is NO hierarchical resource in P3.

To help your problem I suggest to use name resource (if the resource pool is not hugh)

If there is large quantity of named resouce then you can have Resource A and Resource B both have the resouce code of X. as a result you can use the resouce code to do filtering, sorting, grouping ....

Hi mimoune,

You could 1st use hierarchical resources, and give each "sub"resource a specific price; e.g. Mimoune-North will be allocated to activities occuring in Algiers with a unit rate of 1000 and Mimoune-South to activities in the south with a rate of 1500, both being part of the "super"resource Mimoune*

Or if the resource is working Noth or South depending of time, use the "through" column to define the period of time during which the unit rate is used.

IMOO, 1st solution is the best.
