It is a common misconception that P3 Smoothing will not delay the project. Smoothing (as implemented in P3) is simply the name given to the amount of increase that the leveling routines go through above the stated maximum. Good luck!
In P3 - Version 3.0, if u have assigned Project Finish date constrain (Which u cant move) than u can go for Backward levelling which will fix ur End date, will use available float. However, it will change ur LATE START date and not the EARLY START DATE.
If u dont want to change any of ur start/finish dates, u can go for smoothening and selectr levelling with Time constraint option. This will level resource only in the available float. BUT THIS WILL INCREASE UR NO. OF CRITICAL ACTIVITIES, OBVIOUSLY..

You could try levelling by assigning Priority code for each activities.
Define a new Activity Code, say "Priority Code". 1 for most Critical, 2 for Critical, 3, for less Critical and so on and then assign the appropriate priority code to each activities. Note that P3 levels the activity with the highest priority (the lowest number) before activities with lower priority.
In Levelling under Prioritization, use this priority code.
The help file explains clearly how it levels if you search on the topic “How P3 Levels resources” how this works.
There are three smoothing options: None, Non-time Constrained, and Time constrained. Time constrained option will not extend the activities beyond their late dates and therefore not increase the duration of the project.

Many thanks Paul. What are the steps for resources levelling and upon levelling does the schedule change automatically or it is to be saved as an option available. I tried but didnt get the kind of result expected - perhaps I missed some step.
Levelling allows the option of leveling within float and you may increase the available resources and then level to optimize the number of resources required.
