to change "hours per time period" you need to be logged in as admin and go to [admin]>[admin preferences]> tab [time periods] then you can do what ever you want.
the problem can be solved by chance settings in user preferences.
Actions> go to [edit]>[user preferences] tab[time units] then under [Durations format] and set unit of time to [Hour].
you will see now that od of 24 hrs = one day.
tis problem is caused by your settings in [units per time period] you can change it in admin pref’s (primavera use this as a conversion rule for calculate differend units back to hrs. every project is calculated to hrs in the background of the database)
Interesting to hear that someone else has the same problem with the durations when changing calendars. In my view the calendar selected should override all other time settings. Is this a fault that should be reported to Primavera, if not done already?
You also need to be aware of the global Time Period settings under Admin Preferences. The duration entered (in days) is worked out (in hours) using the Admin Preferences and converted back to a duration using the activity calendar.
For example:
Global Time periods are set to 24h/d, 7d/wk etc.
No resources, activities are task dependent.
EXAMPLE 1 - 8hrs x 5d Calendar
Duration entered=5days=24*5=120hrs. Based on 8x5 the duration will be 15days, excluding weekends (120/8)
Start=20/2/06
Finish=10/3/06
EXAMPLE 2 - 10hrs x 7d Calendar
Duration entered=5days=24*5=120hrs. Based on 10x7 the duration will be 12days, including weekends (120/10)
Start=20/2/06
Finish=3/3/06
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Ive found a similar problem. I have a calendar which is 10 hrs x 7 days and cannot get the durations to calculate properly (I get strange start and finish hours, with activities spread over 3.5 instead of 2 days, for example. Ive tried changing the settings under User Preferences, but this doesnt really work as it affects activities on other calendars, and of course it affects other projects.
Do I have to change other calendars elsewhere, such as WBS or project? None of which makes sense - surely if I specify a calendar to an activity it should override any defaults. It works fine when I use other calendars, such as for railway possessions which are often strange hours overnight at weekends!!
You will need to assign this new 24x7 calendar as the default calendar for the project for new activities to automatically have it assigned. You will also need to change the calendar assigned to each of your existing activities; either by adding the calendar column to your view and filling down, or doing a global change.

DEAR /A LL
I already done all this steps but problem still .
I want to tell you problem in details
First I create new calendar 24*7 days and done new tasks with new calendar
Example :-
First task 24 hours ( that mean this will stay 1 day )
After that when I go to user preference to change hour to day
24 hours appear = 3 days ( that mean 1 days =8 hours )
This is problem
I create calendar 24 hours per day but system use default calendar 8 hours per day
This is problem
In another side I go to defult to set new calendar but problem still
24 hours = 3 days
And I want
24 hours = 1 day
Another problem original duration
When I create some steps and I want to see summation of all duration of this tasks in main original duration
But I found number in original duration is not correct
Could you solve me this problem
Thank you

Create a resource;
Create a resource shift with 1 shift 24 hrs;
Assign this resource to activities;
Actvity Type = Resource Dependent.
Think thats it, hope it works.
