I have managed some projects using P3 to produce all the EV data.
I would have Cost Resources with cost and no units against the WBS activity, I prefer WBS to Hammocks.
I then had Resources & hours without costs against the activities to get a forecast of resource requirements. The Actual hours imported against the WBS activities from a timesheet system.
I had difficulty getting the ninth Autocost rule to work in the way the manual said it should work so I just imported the Actual Costs, Actual Hours and Costs to Complete after I rescheduled the project.
There is an article on my web site showing some of my work.
Is it recommended, it is a lot of work but the results were good.

It is a good exploratory idea! Frankly, havent tried it but knowing that hammock supposedly represents a summary of several activities, the resulting earned value may not be what the real progress of the group of activities represents. It can be done alright but the earned value will be some kind of a "cheat", the EVA will not be realistic.
I wouldnt recommend it. It is a very good idea though...
