I agreed that software and methodology is only a tools. People is the "management" that is what make us different from animal because we can use tools.



However, to be a good project manager / planner or any occupation, you need a set of right tools to do the job. I am still learning how to become a good PM with new tools I learn each day to assist me.



Just a example, years ago the carpenter do not have a laser guide electric saw, or laser measurement. Yes they completed the job required. However, they may not as competitive and effective if they still use their old tools in today’s world.



My point is we "everyone" lives in a competitive environment and that requires us to become a knowledge seeker, seeking for better ways of doing things, better tool to do our job. Yes we do have our choice of not seeking, its our freedom of choice.



Some of my workmate look at me as a Prima Donna. Because I always try to automate task that can be achieve by computer. That spares me time to think, and surf the web for knowledge seeeeeking…



And I totally agree that site knowledge will benefit the planning scheduleing and project manage.

Just as important, is the gossip.

I’ve worked within a Project where I’ve been surrounded by the Project Team, and I’m currently working in a Project Management Office environment where I’m 170 Miles away from the guys.

It’s amazing how much more information can be gleaned, almost by osmosis, through being in day to day contact with the team.

Also the quality of information you do get is generally of a far higher quality, because in having casual day to day interactions with the guys, you learn to read between the lines of what they are saying (often about each other).

I miss being ’on site’, but not enough to make me want to work 170 miles away from my new baby.... sometimes working remotely has it’s advantages :o)

Darrell, virtual planning will only work when you can communicate effectively with the on-site team (it’s a two way street). In my experience, you miss a lot when you are not on-site.

If the project is simple then hands off is best

if it requires barking then the management is best from the PM not the software

i also would like to be in the pub not the site

and if robots can do the planning and the work i for one wont be a luddite

I for one believe, Project Management is a tool, or set of tools, or lots of tools. It is the software and it is the people. It can in my mind be either or both. Have managed many a project, without ever having to see it in real life.

Still it made money and was finished on time. Using digital reporting, cameras, pictures, people and contractor reports.



Might I suggest, that there is really no need to actually get ones hands dirty, as a planner. Am looking forward to the day when no human labour need be employed on a building site. They are very dangerous, dusty & noisy places generally.

Do you belive P3 or for that matter any software is Project management

or are people the Project managers

people ie the person with Project manager on his door

not software jockey sorry planner
