Project Manager copies activities in the sequence you select and then pastes activities in that same sequence; according to the First-In First-Out principle.
So if you sort by Activity Name (instead of Activity ID), and then select the activities to copy, it will also paste activities in that sequence. With that paste (and "B" as Activity ID Prefix) it will automatically renumber the activities with the increment selected (i.e. B1000, B1010, etc.)
The end result is that A1000 will not (necessarily) match B1000, and A1010 can be a different activity than B1010, etc.
So if you first sort by Activity ID and then do copy & paste, it should work as you prefer.

I would like to clarify where you paste the activities. Are you trying to paste it in the same "Project" but different "group"?
If so, you could try to "cut" the activities instead of "copy". This is because activity ID must be unique, so if you try to "copy" activities and paste to another group Primavera will not allow duplication of IDs so it tends to create new IDs based on your ID numbering options.
Hope this will help,

Something to try - at the project level, select the Defaults tab and set your auto numbering defaults to what you need.
Hope this helps.
