This is a part of the “Golden Quadrilateral” (GQ) Project connecting India’s 4 major Metros. A 77km section of the existing NH-4 Highway, built on a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis, through private sector participation, from Maharashtra to Belgaum in Karnataka State, was upgraded and widened with 2 new lanes and an 8-lane Toll Plaza. Construction of 6 Major bridges, 12 Minor bridges, 13 Grade junctions, 10 Grade separators, 6 Vehicular underpasses, 11 Cattle walk / Cart tracks, 15 Cattle walk cum Drain, 28 bus bays/shelters, 122 Box culverts, 2 Toll plazas, Sankeshwar bypass and Ghat sections with 6 Lane Rigid pavement, proposed new carriage way with 2 Lane Rigid Pavement, Existing carriage way with 2 Lane Flexible pavement & Service road on both sides except Ghat sections.

The National Road Operating and Construction Limited (NROCL) proposed the development of a modern multi-lane (4/6 lanes) motorway, connecting Jamaican capital Kingston, in the south-east to Montego Bay city, in the north-west, and Ocho Rios, on the north-central coast. The construction of this new 2-lane dual carriageway included five major bridges, and 4-laning of selected existing stretches.
