I tried a few possible options, but the only thing that worked for me was to do the following:
1) In all of your projects, i.e. individual programmes, you introduce e.g. the "Number 20"-column. In this column you write the value "1" for the first non-summary task - and only for this task. Save and close. Repeat for all your existing programmes and for all new programmes to come.
2) In the overall master plan, you indent all your subprojects under a summary heading. Now for the "Number 20" column under "Customize Fields - Calculation for task and group summary rows - Rollup" you choose "Sum".
The sum of all inserted projects should now appear automatically in the overall summary heading in the master plan.
