With reference to your other posting about UK/US differences; the UK has the same problem. The housing cost disparity from one location to another can make a very good job unobtainable just on the price of houses alone.
It is interesting to note that the same applies elsewhere.

Biggest problem is, who can afford to live there? I had discussions with someone out there about working out there. they wont pay the cost of living increase necessary to move out there. Housing prices are astronomical.
