After a good run in the UK on freelance, I recently moved to Queensland Australia, in a Senior role as a Planner. to give you an idea on tax, I am paying approx 30%. In addition to the salaries, if you are on a temp visa such as a 457, you may qualify for Living Away From Home Allowance, this is to be negotiated with the employer, but, believe me it makes a difference as it is tax free and can range from 15-30kAU$/yr !!!!
After reading this thread, there does seem to be a large scale of how Planners are paid worldwide. I personally have benefited financially for coming here by at least 20% compared to what i was earning freelance in the UK, but with the benefit of holiday pay, sick pay etc.etc.
There are Australian companies that pay a lot less and as Joel has said, its about how much you can sell yourself for in the end.
Cheers
Steve

Most of what you have read is somewhat true. we have to pay for medical aid (you dont want to rely on the state hospitals etc) but our tax rate is low so it adds up to be a similar overall expense as compared to other countries.
However, we have a serious problem with salary structures. We are definately underpaid (these are approximates):
Planner US$ 4600 - 5200
Senior Planner US$ 5200 - 7300
Planning Manager US 7300 - 8300
Australia definately pays better and I am sure the UK as well. Our cost of living is lower though, but we have a high rate of inflation and our currency is volitile and subject to a lot of fluctuations which can be scary if you are a mobile person.
Anyways, thats what its like in SA - let me know if you want any more advice. We are always looking for planners, lots of work!!!!

Steve gave the best salary scale and if you sold yourself for less, consider yourself done in. That is part of the construction lessons you will learn.
Sreejith, I think the fact that a lot of South African planners are working in other countries; and that SA companies are looking for planners from "developing" countries should give you a clue that they are not paying international market rates at present!
Even some international companies in SA are using their offshore offices in "developing" countries for engineering / services works because their rates are cheaper.
There is no social security system at all in SA.
You will have to pay medical insurance, tax, life insurance, pension etc. etc. all out of what you earn.
Rates are improving, but still not whats available elsewhere.
These days around ZAR350 - ZAR450 / hour for a senior.
But everyone recognises that there is a skills shortage in SA, and Companies need to fill their Affirmative Action quotas! So ensure any employment contract allows for frequent rate reviews!
Unless, of course, you are employed as an expat posted to SA.

I want not arguing whether that system is right or wrong, but I was just explaining what is happening and what is the explanation given for such differences.
I am also Indian , and dont think that intellectually behind anyone!
So it wasnt a debate of right or wrong .. it was just a statement of facts !
I dont want to get in to Mr Nair’s KGB MGB or whatever
(what i know is Mac Index)but i have seen idiots earning huge sums in Arab managed companies (NOT EUROPEAN MANAGED) only because of their nationalities.
last month i was in GERMANY ,there are several nationalities working in there, polish, Indians, dutch etc
and understood that they are not being paid based on what they will earn back home or based on the currency exchange rate

Indians are widely recognized as talented employees, how ever most of the good entrepreneurs are from west.
I have taken the same setance from your reply. I fully agree with you that most of the companies are from west.
But i would like to highlight one thing over here, have you gone through the corporate policies of the these companies, these companies are mentioning in bold "We are equal opportunity employer" Also there shall not be any descrimination or differaciation based on location, nationality, colour, gender, religion etc.
I hope you are quiet experianced enough to undrstand the meaning of the above. For most of the companies these policies are to hang on wall or to take the employees signature at the time of joining as a token of he agrees with that.
But when it comes to salaries or benefits theses compies very cleverly changes there stand and makes the difference as western and TCN.
there are few exceptions which really treat there employees preciously without any discrimination what so ever.
I dont agree with your explanation, and as far as my personal openion concern, the salaries should be solely dependant upon, talent, experiance and level of education.
Cheers,
Abhi

If you pay 7000 AED/QAR to any European/American , he wont be able to even buy a burger back home !
So forget about savings & all !
Further, Indians are widely recognized as talented employees, how ever most of the good entrepreneurs are from west. Hence most of the top brass of Oil & gas companies are from west. The establishment of oil & gas exploration in middle east , undoubtfully goes to western people.
It is very normal that a western boss get his known people to work with him in senior posts / key positions !
How ever there are many Indians who have grown up in salaries and earning 50K+ per month .. mostly in production companies (clients)
A fair comparison will be "how many times home salary you are earning"
If the earning in UK is 80KGBP per annum , how much GBP per annum some one is earning now (Considering tax & all , what is the increase in saving)

In UAE salary largely depend on the passport/nationality
for every profession
the last 15 years work experiance in Dubai
taught me that all neigbouring middle eastern countries also follow this...
here is the salary of a "junior planner" in dubai
1.Indian/Pakistani : 3000 to 7000 AED
2.Arabs : 12000 to 18000 AED
3.European/AU/NZ : 25000 +++ (if you can just read plan ,you will be recruited as a PlanningManager (!) dont worry you will have Able subordinates.)
come on boys tell the truth

Hi All !
It wont make much sense , if we plainly list and compare salaries in different countries.
Living cost , especially housing & travel are the things to be looked in.
Here in Middle east , for all senior posts, company provides house/flat , car with petrol, annual tickets, medical..etc.
We even get break fast, lunch & tea free of cost.
So , here in middle east basic salary is the ting which people compare.
For a planning engineer, basic salary can range anywhere between $900 To $9000 per month
How ever average basic salary will be $2500 per month.
But if we look at the CTC , it will be atleast double the basic , since rent is hitting anytime high in the middle east.
Back in India , salaries are compared in terms of CTC.
Very few companies provide accomodation , and those who get that will not be paid with HRA.
Average salary of planning engineer (CTC) in India will range from : $250 to $1000 per month.
You may notice the paradox that , the lower range of basic salary in the middle-east is is the higher end of CTC in India.
But some one earning $1000 per month CTC in India can live a decent life and surely make a not so bad saving !
Cheers!
