I was in Qatar during the period 2004-2005, if u happen to stay in doha you will get all facilities, but if u happen to get posted at sites like dkhan fields or messaieed then it is all in the middle of the desert you will not get any city benefits.
also there exists an exit visa which has to be processed if you want to leave the country which is tedious

I did saw the development in Doha specially those infrastructures and building works related to the hosting of Asian Games in Doha. I did heard the trend that is going on in Doha with regards to expenses. Also, Doha going to be dynamic, metropolitan and cosmopolitan city someday.
What I observed and heard was very old and dilapidated place of living were demolished and newly built first class place of accommodation are now very visible.
I can not say more, hopefully, i can visit again Doha, Qatar.
Cheers,
Charlie

I worked in Qatar until June 2004. Then I work here in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE. Generally, Qatar is cheaper compared to UAE.
Im sorry i cant go into more details since i was in single/bachelor status. Car rental is about 90 - 100QR per day depends upon the model and year of manufacture.
There are also a lot of second hand cars, one year old model, that readily available in the market. Range in Qatari Riyal will depends upon the model since branded cars are more expensive than Korean (Daewoo, Hyundai, etc.) cars.
