The PMI has a publication called "The Standard for Portfolio Management". The question "What is a portfolio?" is answered on page 4 as follows:
"A portfolio is a collection of projects or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. The projects or programs of the portfolio may not necessary be interdependent or directly related (PMBOK Guide-4e). These components of a portfolio are quantifiable; that is, they can be measured, ranked and prioritized."

Dear Shahul,
The PMI has a publication called "The Standard for Portfolio Management". The question "What is a portfolio?" is answered on page 4 as follows:
"A portfolio is a collection of projects or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. You can buy the standard from www.pmi.org.

Hi Shahul
A literal translation is a "Box of Paper". Nowadays it means a collection or group of documents.
For instance an investor will have a share portfolio and a politician a list of his responsibilities.
Best regards
