Physical % And Duration %

I absolutely agree with Khuong. In addition I stumbled over a sentence of yours: "So that i can forcaste, howlong our duration is completed and howmuch % we completed so far in reality."

So I have the impression, you want to forecast something. From where do you get %-complete? In the past I had to learn that an estimation of %-complete is absolutely unreliable, but if the people estimate which date they’ll finish their work, it will be much more reliable.

Would it be an alternative, to use the expected finish date?

Maybe I understood you wrong.

Hi Suresh

We can not get activity % complete from UDF through Global change fuction.

I suggest that you should update progress directly to physical % complete field, instead of UDF.

But’Physical % complete’ is not rolled up, because it is a

discrete, user entered value assigned to an activity. Since

’Physical % Complete’ does not relate to the duration,

units or costs of the activity, there is no common

denominator to use for the summary.

However there is a workaround to roll-up physical % complete to WBS level.

Workaround:

It is possible to configure the Activity’s ’Performance %

complete’ to equal the ’Physical % complete’.

Performance % complete can be rolled up to the summary

bands. However, to achieve this, the following three

statements need to be true:

1) The ’% Complete type’ of the activities must be

set to ’Physical % complete’. This option is located

in the General tab in the Activities View (Note: this

will set the ’Activity % complete’ value to be equal

to ’Physical % complete’. This will also impact the

Earned Value calculation.)

2) The ’Technique for calculating performance %

Complete’ needs to be set to Activity % complete.

This option is located in the Earned Value tab in the

WBS View (Note: this will set the ’Performance %

complete’ value to be equal to Activity % complete,

which equals Physical % complete).

3) Finally, in order for the Performance %

Complete to be rolled up to the summary band(s),

costs need to be assigned to the activity. These

costs must also be present in the Primary baseline.

Please Note:

At the summary level, the Performance %

complete is calculated as follows:

Performance % Complete = (BCWP * 100) / BAC

(Where the BCWP is the Budgeted Cost of

Work Performed and the BAC is the Budget At

Completion)

BCWP is calculated as Activity % Complete *

Baseline Total Cost

By setting the 3 conditions above, the Activity %

complete will equal the Physical % complete thus

ensuring that the summary value for Performance %

complete is calculated with regard to the Physical %

complete, weighted by the activities’ cost.

Dear Khuong

You are exactly right. But its simple question.

How can get the % completed on basis of the user_entered column for actual completion.

Eg: everyday i will put the progress % in a userdefined column. I want the total % for that in the top of the WBS. So that i can forcaste, howlong our duration is completed and howmuch % we completed so far in reality.

Activity % complete will only give you % on basis of the duration and it could be different from the reality. Isnt it ?

Thank you

Dear Suresh!

Actvity have 3 percent complete type : duration, units, physical.

Depend on which type you choose for activity, the value will reflect in "Activity % complete" column.

The main factor you should focus when analyse updated schedule is "Activity % complete" column, not physical % or duration %.

Duration, unit, physical % column is just used for temporary store.

Calculation of Earned value will base on activity % complete.

So, there will be no confict if your duration and physical % are diferent. Because Primavera just look at Activity % complete for calculation.

Please feel free to contact me if you have problem

Dieter, thank you very much. Let me study through.

Suresh,

% complete in P3e is worth a study.

In a recent thread "Level of Effort" it was discussed: http://planningplanet.com/forum/forum_post.asp?fid=1&Cat=8&Top=35365.

The best way to get informed on the meaning of attributes is to switch on the "hint help" e.g. under view. then e.g.: Move mouse into the table area --> right button --> "Columns" --> expand % complete --> (right)click onto the item you want to know --> a window appears with a good explanation.

Hope this will help
