I had a go at that and it seems ok(version 5.0 into version 4.1).
I was just trying to import XER files generated in p3e 3.1.1 into p3e version 5.0 and it would appear that these are not accepted, do you have any knowledge where this is concerned??

Thanks for your answer, however the question still remains will earlier versions of p3e import version 5.0 xer files. I appreciate your answer but all this indicates to me is that i must now buy more software to fulfill this basic function.
