Hi everyone, I found this topic because I have a problem exporting/importing between P3 and Excel 2003.
First a little background - I have data provided to me in various formats MSP, PP etc so for me it is best to combine them in Excel and edit as appropriate.
To analyse the data seriously, I want to import the Excel sheet into P3, in the past I have always used SureTrak because it is easy to copy from Excel; with P3 however I am not so experienced.
So in simple English (all these RAs and .dbfs are new to me), step by step, can somebody please explain to me how to export/import P3/Excel...
Cheers

If you do not have the RA utilities, export activities in dbf file ,open it in excel, update & save as DBF( if you are using Office 2003). I have been using dbf for successfully.
Thanks All, Ill combine Gun and Ronald technic. Export the heading first with a few activities to wk1 then copy all data from DBF to wk1, I use Excel in this case.
And wow Ill try ODBC as per Raviraj do. I hope it works well, could you give the hyperlink address to download ODBC.
Ill try them tomorrow coz its sunday now in Japan. Im planning for some LNG Project of Qatar and Iran.
imagine what else there is to find in the old posts now that the search function works again. :)
---------start from original post---------
0. Use only DBF export.
1. You will be spared the number of rows restrictions for WK1 files.
2. My experience is DBF files are more robust.
3. Don’t bother to paste inbetween or insert or whatever in Excel. But then fix the file BEFORE saving with Insert/Name/Define/Database(choose up and leftmost cell and down and rightmost cell) (this is a little known clue. had to read the DBF format specs someplace).
4. You can also select ALL of the data in the cell and save the file while all are selected (surprisingly it works but have found no documentation regarding the issue).
5. If format errors then copy/pastespecial/format from line one (or known working file) to the problematic areas (problems most probably are: lengh, date format, text read as number).
6. If problem with text showing as number then use ’ before the value then "enter".
7. to not loose some characters from the TITLE column keep it wide before import. Also choose "Definition length" as 48 before export.
These are the little bits of information that come to my mind on short notice. Will post more when/if I remember them but this short list should be very useful to everyone as is.
Its freeware and available on FTP site of primavera.
You can transfer as many activities as possible.
Never tried to import? Please check and tell me also, weather it is possible or not. I have used it for making my monthly reports. Very easy to export and saves hell out of time.

Thanks Kian and Ronald for your suggestions. Im working for multiple LNG project with up to 6,000 activities per project. I also process such P3 data in Excel as Excel has many functional calculation and nice graphics.
For me its not so practical to export w/ filter because I dont want to miss event 1 activity. Anyway, may be it is shortcoming of oled p3 version..lol.
Kian and Ronald, is there any limitation also for number of activities in importing ? Im worry its trouble when I imported 6,000 activities.

It is wise to export the headings, as P3 requires these to be there in order to re-import later. To create titles each column, check the "Title each column" checkbox on the Format tab of the export criteria. Be sure to not edit them in any way if you want to re-import data using this spreadsheet. Good luck!

Each time you export from P3 to excel(WK1,WKS)format you can send 2048 activities maximum,so you can export more than once by using filter in selection tab.

Try using the RA & export in excel or access.
This option is provided by Primavera in the CD itself.

Use LOTUS instead for transferring, It can export upto 20000 activities, I believe.
