I also encountered the same trivia while working on my project. Although the project is closed still for historical records it has to be retained in the system.
What I do is make a copy the project and then delete the original from the master. As to add the project again to master I again copy the project in the master project group.

I would use a filter to display ALL activities except those belonging to the closed projects; I would certainly not remove the closed projects from the master project, in case I need to work on the whole lot of data some day later.

Terry,
a project is "closed" when every activity is 100% complete, isnit ?
you could possibly add a project code "Status" that says something like "Not started, Running, Closed"
