Planning Unit

If i m not mistaken, in P3, planning unit is supppose to indicate the "smallest" unit of duration for your project.

So i guess, if ur activties is measured in hours (17 hrs to complete) then choose HOUR as planning unit. if ur activities is measured in days (5 days to complete) then u choose DAY as planning unit.

Unfortunately, in either case, it will not help in your "shift" scheduling which i suppose centers on "who (which shift) is scheduled to do what" as oppose to P3 which centers on "what is scheduled to be done". In P3 the WHO is not a factor, but the HOW MANY (resource qty).

Hi weni,

I have used shifts; 2*12 hours. This 12 hours included lunch but I just ignored the 1 hour. You just create a 24 hour calendar and there was nothing else to do. The same is true for 3* 8 hour shifts. This works if one shift can pass his work onto the next shift. When it comes to resourcing try to be generic as possible; ie electrician rather than electrician (day).

I named my cranes as these werent interchangable. Although they could do the same activity then I came up with a complex solution but fortunately P3 was used for planning and not costing.

Cheers,

Mark

It is not possible to have two different planning units to be displayed/combined in P3, may be you can convert the day into equivalent hours and keep everything in hours. i don’t have any experience in using shifts in p3, may be you can try with the calendars(naming it as 2shifts/10hours calendar for a resource) but when you club total working hours for all resources will give you a misleading answer i believe.
