Total Float problems

Chito,

1) It would have been better to ask your question in a new post, rather than reply to one that is over 7 years old.

2) I assume you are using P3?

3) What does "LS" mean?

4) Please describe what relationship types you have used (eg finish-start, start-start, etc)

5) Does the "GF Plan" activity have any sucessors other than "FF Plan" and "RF Plan"?

6) Have you included any constraints on any of the activities?

7) Are all the activities using the same calendar?

8) Have you applied resources to any of the activities? If so, are the resources using a different calendar?

9) What activity type (task, milestone, etc) have you used?

Cheers,

After scheduling the program, please follow the relationship lines in the Gantt Chart to track the critical activities. It may happen that after updating the actual progress in previous activities, some of the non-critical activities may even become critical and hence the critical path may change. If the problem persists still, kindly send me a copy of your program to the below-mentioned mail id: indro_das@yahoo.com. I will get back to you on the same.

To all planners:

I have problem regarding total floats.....

Present date: April 23, 2011

Data Date May 1, 2011 (start of the project)

Project start > successor = project site layout > successor = GF Plan > successors = FF Plan and RF Plan...

From GF plan, imposed 15 days LS from predessor.

from GF to FF and RF plan, imposed 15 days LS.

when I schedule, having data of May 1, GF has TF of 8 days while FF and RF has FF of 291 each and TF of 299 each.

What went wrong with the schedule? Help pls........

Hi Vincent,

Sorry, I couldnt get back to you earlier regarding this issue. I received the project files and Ive taken a quick look at it recently. I dont know if youve noticed this or not, but the non-critical activities are realyy extremely critical. After 1 update at June 30th, all activities have TFs ranging from -44 to -71 since you have a tight must finish by dealine for the project. But since some activities dont have the same max. -ve TF, they will be shown as non-critical (green bars). Simply these came from multiple paths being created in the schedule.

The activity C3214 is a split point where the TF con the critical path changes frfom -61 to -73, so all activities with -61 before that activity is critical (max -ve TF), while any activity less than -73 after that activity will be shown to be non-critical. This situation rises from the two successors this activity has.

In Tools, Options, you have the ability to adjust the criticality shown in your project to only the longest path, as in your case, or to any activity having a TF less than a number that can specify. If you try this it could give you a more realistic display of ciriticality in your project.

Hi Vincent,

Im interested to look at your program and see what can i do to help you. What I can think of now is perhaps, when you update your activities the critical line has changed a bit. Meaning, in preparing a program there is what you call multiple critical activities. It might be possible that the critical path has change its course. I dont know, if you can send me your file in my email address at sedeleon@hotmail.com I would appreciate it very much.

Actually your post has stimulated a question in my mind i.e., does the program change the critical path whenever we update our program even if it is on schedule update?

Thanks.

Thank!Mohamed Gebriel. i already send a file to you. This is my baseline file. the originaldate date is 15Apr01.

Once you receive the file, if you update it as per schedule,30 JUN 02,31 Jul 02,....30 Nov02. Then you will find that some of the structural work activities became non-critical.

My friend told me that it may caused by assign diffirence activities to same path activities will cause total float change.I tried it and it is no problems.so what do u think?

Vincent,

Im not 100% sure of what caused this specific problem, but probably these problems occur due to delays with multi predecessors.

What I think might have happened depends on if you have more than one predecessor relationship for the first activity in the updated 0-float structural activities. So, if the path of activities leading to the other predecessor (Not the structural activities) have been delayed or are at best are on schedule, while the original path (Actual structural activities) are ahead of schedule, this will result in giving the remaining structural activities which are in front of the data date some float up till this activity with the dual predecessors, while the other predecessor relationship has now become a driving predecessor due to its delays.

Of course all of this is just a probable cause. There could be other causes to this same case. It could help if you send me your project as a backup, but plz send it to my work e-mail as it has more space and Id be glad to help.
