does anybody know what book is recommended for oil & gas pipeline projects?



There are many planning books published, but I have never found one that is specific for oil & gas projects.



Most of the books are written for building works





Help me pls

There’s a book printed also by RS Means way back in 90’s (Planning & Scheduling Manual) I would suggest to be a useful reference in PERT/CPM.

Hi Nieman and David,



I will give you a brief history.



During the early and middle 70’s, US of A is losing the war in Vietnam. The President of USA (Richard Nixon) feared domino effect, meaning losing all Asia to the commies as in Communist.



So to mitigate falling all Asia to Communist, the US of A propped Dictatorship sympathic or under the control of Uncle SAM. This happened also in South American Countries like Pinochet of Chile, etc.



For the dictotorship to gain the support of his countryman, he needs livelihood projects so that the people will not go hungry. The dictator do not have money so Uncle Sam loan him money and embarked on a massive construction activities related to infrastructures



That is the brief history related to the book.



So so to efficiently manage the loan a project management system must be in place.

Another post "The Philippine Government printed a lot of this book and distributed it to all government engineers including my dad."



In conclusion, I did inform the title of the book.



Also, the book is printed by the Philippine Goverment, so you may not find it in Amazon.com or other website selling books.



Lately, I really dont know if this book is still in circulation in Philippine Government Agencies.



I only told Ulyses to find the book hoping that maybe, he got some friends, relatives whose Dad work in DPWH, DOT DepEd, these are the agencies implementing infra works, so that he can inquire and borrow the book if available.



The good news is that the essential of planning is found in all planning books. However, some book from other countries do not want to acknowledge the origin of PERT/CPM. How PERT/CPM become a success stories. So the reader of this book do not believe that PERT/CPM is the best ever.



BUT it is different with the book im saying here because it did claim to have success stories of projects using PERT/CPM.

Did I dream it or did you almost reply to my request that you check the title of the book you recommended as I was trying to follow your advice and find a copy.



I think you might have made a mistake in recollecting the title as Amazon and AbeBooks have no reference too it. As it was so important in your mastering of the essentials of proper project management I am sure you must remember the author?



Please can you assist me further?

You are good or maybe the best.



The Philippine Government printed a lot of this book and distributed it to all government engineers including my dad.



The Presidential Decree was futher strengthen by P. D. 1081. It makes mandatory to have PERT/CPM part of the bid submission (technical aspect)irrespective of size. So, it was not only government engineers that got knowledge of PERT/CPM but also engineers from the contractor side getting involve with bids or tender.



1975 I’m just a kid at thirteen, not even thinking that i will kidnap the best book from my Dad’s library. I lost the book, but the fundamental or essentials is in my soul. It is very easy to catch a person with no strong base in the basic of planning, PERT/CPM

Extract from Presidential Decree No. 759 dated 31 July 1975.



"No program of work for any project which requires special site investigation, survey, and construction plans shall be approved unless such plans are used as basis of the program: Provided, That for projects with an estimated cost of P1000,000 or more, the PERT/CPM technique shall be used and a time-scaled diagram of the activities shall as well a monthly cash flow shall be made part of the program of work. The PERT/CPM diagram shall be used by the agency concerned as a basis for, inter alia, monitoring the progress of work, making progress payments, and assessing claims for extra cost and time extension."



He may not have been perfect, but Ferdinand was ahead of many when it claim to planning.

Would you be good enough to check the title (and maybe the author) please. I checked AbeBooks as I thought there would be a few second-hand copies around following FM’s downfall but there is nothing around.

There was a book that the Goverment of the Republic of the Philippines during the Presidency of Ferdinand Marcos made it mandatory for all engineers to read and study and to use in project implementation.



The title of the book: PERT / CPM Construction Management in government project



A very simple title but the content are exhustive on the fundamental of PERT/CPM Construction Mangement. You will be trained on the forward pass and backward pass that new generation of planners find it hard to compute.



It also dwell on the development of PERT/CPM. Of course this project management idea comes from the greatest state at present: the US of A (United States of America).



I kidnaped the book from my dad and use it in my college days, on-job-training, teaching day, early days in construction, etc., etc., until i lost the book.



My advise: try to find that book, all the essential for proper project planning are there for you to master.

Two books I would recommend for anyone in planning or project management



1. Project Management Planning and Control by Rory Burke, I have the second edition it may have moved on to more recent editions.



2. Project Management by Dennis Lock (Gower) I have sixth edition again this now be a later edition.

I recommend, “CPM in Construction Management, Sixth Edition” by Plotnick & O’Brien, published by Mc Graw Hill. It is a very thorough book. Good luck!
