logic of the programme

It’s the same with any language (English is the language of this forum)- the more you use it, the better you become.

It’s good to see people trying to post in a language which is not their first language - please don’t stop posting just because you haven’t quite perfected the use of English. We’ll try and interpret what you write as best we can.

As I’m English I can say we are the laziest nation when it comes to learning a different language (most don’t!) and so those people that learn a different language should be applauded and encouraged.

As for the post, there is no right answer. Whichever method you use, be aware of what each means, how it works and then after rescheduling inspect the programme to make sure it still makes sense.

Easier said than done I hear someone say - I’ve got 3,000 activities or more! Try filtering on a time slice, the ones you need to check first are usually close to the data date. Then filter on float (say less than 2 weeks) and check them.

Like most things, no quick fix to getting it right.

It’s understandable that communications plays a vital part if not the most important aspect in this business. I have to admit that English is not my mother language (i just hope you understand me)and I’m not sure if I’m really good at it (only the listener or reader can determine that).

However, since this is an international community (I supposed), I hope there’ll be a spirit of sharing not only in technical terms but also the proper use of the applied language (which is English) ...forgive me I’m getting serious this time...I’ll be out of job soon...(maybe because of my English)..so please anyone...???

hi Ashraf,

You have started the thread and then there was little bit confusion by others and then you resolved by putting clear-cut statements.

Anyhow, thats a good suggestion. Same logic we can use for Pipeline network project also.

Thanks buddy.

Dear Andrew Flowerdew

what is your opinion also.

In roads and infrastructure projects , we are prefering to use progress overide logic based on the fact that this types of projects are horizontal projects and it can work out of sequance (if there is obestruction in on area or activities you can work in anther area or activities without gettig nigative impact on the completion date).

In Buildings project we have to use retained logic because you can not go out of sequance.

thanks

Very thorny question, although I do agree with the sentiments of the article refered to. Neither method may be ideal.

One way to minimise the effect of using progress overide is to use FF links with an appropriate lag although this too will produce unrealistic gaps in activities - it does though have the advantage of making the planner think about the relative relationship between the ends of activities and not just the beginning. (as if often the case)

It also curtails meaningless float in a programme and gives a much more meaningful critical path - if I’d been given a £1 for every activity I’ve seen which showed endless activities with float going on to the end of the project when it was so obviously wrong, I’d be retired now.

Hello,

Just sharing idea.

The drawback in retained logic happened when it is very hard to check if the logic is really right for 5,000 +++ to 30,000 activities in the baseline programme that as per contract must be submitted within 28 days after signing of the contract.

In other words, it is a huge exercise to check if the logic is right.

IN monthly update, you will notice that the finish dates show too much delays.

ON the other side of progress update:

Progress overide gaves an option to rectify what was not right in the first place. Using change control mechanism, the planning team will have an option to re-sequence the updated activities to reflect what the future intent taking into consideration the information that will impact on the schedule.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Ashraf,

This is an interesting topic being discussed lots of time everywhere inclusing the link provided by Karim.

The brief is as follows.

Progress override deletes the predecessor link once an activity starts out of sequence and is hardly ever used.

Retaining logic makes the project duration longer and hence un-necessary delays are shown.

Having said that all planners while monitoring complex EPC/Shutdown scehedules with large number of activities still use Retaining logic for scheduling and then analyse the critical and near critical paths and modify/remove the logic based on positon in the field.
