Linking Progress

Hi Dean

To work and update two schedules at the same time is quit common in P6. The main reason is often that variations are already implemented but not yet approved.

Suggest to proceed as follows;

  • Baseline the schedule, when completed, and call this the "Contract Program"
  • Note that % completion on duration type can be rolled up to a higher level.
  • Units and Physical % completion cannot be rolled up.
  • As and when it becomes necessary update it with durations, and or labor units.
  • When ready, baseline the schedule and call it "Target Program".

So, now their are two "Programs" in the same schedule.

Updating the schedule

  • Update the schedule say on a weekly basis. Their is only one schedule!

Analysis an reporting

  • Assign the baseline "Contract Program" to the schedule. Note, this is not the same as making or setting the baseline.
  • Now you can apply all the CPI, Performance, Schedule % completion, Schedule Variance you desire against the Contract Baseline.
  • The next step to assign the Target Program to the schedule and report the against the Target Program.

Trust this helps

Johannes

Hi Mike,

It's quite confusing that (you) being the promotor of Finish-to-Start (FS) only, and it seems that you don't care about the day-to-day activities (as a delay analyst)?

If I remember correctly, you also mentioned that "disruption" starts from "upperfixer" or something (the one who climb the ladder fixing something).

I agree with Vladimir, copy and paste will only work on exactly the same program (twins).

Kindly enlighten me please?

Hi Vladimir

Anything on a spreadsheet can be copy pasted into Powerproject and back again.

Regarding proportionality I really don't know, my work as a delay analyst does not involve day to day project time control.

Hi Mike,

thank you, I understood your approach and expect that it is clear to Asta users.

I expect that by copy-paste you import not only %complete but also all other data including actual and remaining work, actual and remaining duration, actual and remaining material requirements, actual and remaining costs, etc. I hope that Asta does not make all these data proportional to %complete?

Hi Vladimir

If the two layouts are different I have developed a method in the spreadsheet to solve the problem.

The ouput data is in one sheet with unique Task ID's and the input data is in the other sheet with a Vlookup formula that picks up the data with reference to the same Task ID.

The result is copy paste to the output programme.

This works best with Lotus 123 and Asta Powerproject.

Anoon,

Mike explained what did you mean by stating that there is a need in the same layouts. With copy - paste technique it is necessary.

Hi Dean

Welcome to planning planet.

When you enter a percentage progress in a task the value rolls up to the upper level summary bars.

You can switch this off in the progress column dialogue box by clicking off the rolled up values.

If you need to enter the same data to two programmes that have the same format and the tasks are in the same sequence then just copy and paste between the columns.

Anoon,

layout does not matter.

I don't know how it is done in Asta, in Spider Project actual data of all activities will be imported and project status will be shown in any layout.

But it is necessary activity and resource codes to be the same in both versions.

Vladimir,

It's the same thing.

What if the two versions were completely different (i.e. in layouts)?

Anoon,

the question is about moving actual data from one project version to another.

I don't know how it is done in Asta, let's wait for the answers of Asta experts.

Vladimir

how can % complete affect tasks having no relationships?

you should define logic-links.
