my mistake! Trevor is right, it is possible to enter a value for Work eventhough there is no resource assigned to a task;
however, in my opinion this value will not represent "real" work, and MS Project will not be able to establish a relationship between the task duration and the task work
it is possible, but it should be avoided

You can indeed have work assigned to a task without assigning a resource to the task.
Try a test. Make a task, 10 days duration. Show the work column. Type in 100. Switch to Task Usage View and there it is, spread evenly across the days.
Of course, even though you can do it, it is a very bad idea and you should assign the resources.
U r right.I had to assign the resources to get the Work column Values.
Since i dont want to add the resources in my schedule and monitor the project based on the duration I have manually put the work days same as duration.

sorry to say that, but you are certainly wrong: it is not posisble to have Work if you do not have resource assignments
beside, you do not need resources to monitor your project; you will enter Actual Duration or (Duration)% Complete instead of Actual Work or Work% Complete
