Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Dear All,

being Project Planner in a aeronautic company runing large scale projects (several hundred of thousands of man-hours) I’m looking for a collaborative solution to support the traditional project management axis (planning, HR, reports..) and also enhance our process / manufacturing / workflow follow-up

I would tend to favour Primavera P6 (with specific development ) rather than SAP-Manufacturing but when I read its white paper or websites,
I don’t see a big difference in what these softwares offer...

could you help me please ?
In what are SAP and Primavera different ? in which function they are competing ?
If you had the choice, which solution would you select ?

In advance, I thank you for your answers

MH

Salut Mathieu

I assume you mean the module SAP PS. PS stands for Poject System. It originally was written to control investments and the cash flow for projects. The algorithm for scheduling and the other planning functions cannot be compared with Primavera, Powerproject, OPX and others. In addition if you’ll present the SAP user interface to a Planner or a scheduler, mostly they will refuse to work with it - SAP sales reps proably will say different; so have detailed look. So for each activity there is a parameter available - "dsex", if I remember right - where you can indicate "externally scheduled" and SAP’s scheduling algorithm won’t touch it. Equivalent for the network part of PM ("Plant Management"). Both modules are designed for cooperation with PM software. In Germany many companies use Primavera and SAP PS and/or SAP PM connected by interfaces.

The size of your projects and your requirements for reporting do exceed the capabilities of MSP for my opinion.

Luck luck with your decision!

Dear Mathieu,

For me, there’s no point of comparison between Primavera and SAP. SAP is for total business processes such as administration, budgeting, accounting, purchasing, management, etc. while Primavera is purely for Project Management that includes planning, scheduling, control and monitoring.

In a way, primavera, msproject and other kind of schedules is useful in some aspect of SAP process, but vice versa, SAP is of no use or has no space in primavera program nor in other scheduling software, I guess. May I then advice you to utilize primavera, msproject and other project management program in your planning tasks, and concurrently utilize SAP for your other business process specially in material procurement. I guess, that is the collaborative process in huge corporate entities.

Simply sharing.
