Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

I’m looking at starting a career as a Planner, before I start going through MS Projects and Sure Trak, I would like to read up on Critical Planning Analysis and not sure which books would be a good place to start, any recommendations would be appreciated?

Thanks,
Bryan.

If you are interested in having a quick workshop of P6, check PrimaveraTools.com

Especially, if you know how to use P3, this workshop can help you to get used to P6 (or P5).

Project Management

Generally a very good book, easily available on amazon, and relatively cheap. This was the guided reading for Project Management in my Mech Eng Degree, and a surprising number of people have a copy tucked away somewhere.

Alternatively, just have a bash ! It may not be easy, but CFD it aint !

Does anybody has any idea on using LIMEWIRE.

Its basically P2P software. Lot of stuff can be downloaded from the peers. Is there any issue with copyright of books?

Is it legal to download planning books from limewire?

Plz advise

Ponnaganti Sridhar,

Total float are calculated by LS-ES or LF-EF. On your closing activity may show -80 days but some of your activity are still positive float therefore your overall delay should be based on your project summary which you said -69 days. For you to check if you are correct, do a manual calculation based on your summary Late Start minus Early Start less non-working days if you are using 6 days plus holiday. For double check use Late Finish minus Early Finish less non working days.

Hello to all,

even though iam a member of this site since from last 3 years, i had never dared to ask my questions on this site, since i think i am not so big as u all , and iam still in learing process.

Now yet i have a question, i don’t know wether i can ask or not,( may b am i fool in all your views by this question but iam dearing this time)if my question is a stupid or fault pls forgive me.

In my present project i had used two working calanders,
1.One with 7 days working days
2. 2nd with 6 days Working days

most of my activities are parked under Calander 1 and a few activites which are not related to constuction (Document) are parked under clander 2( while at the time of makeing the programme i though even the is construction going on a weekly off day on site , office work may not be there (this is the 1st time i done like this, this all happen because my the time i joined here in this company my P.M had done a programme in EXEL and told try to make similar and so when asked he told me told take all 7 days as working). the programme approved and it is going good, even though i had a little hikup in the 1st month.

here comes the actual problem, now the project is going on delay, since if i check with last (closing activity)of the schedule it is showing an -ve total float of -80day, which means an delay of 80days but if i check with the summary (over all summary on the top in the layout) it is showing an over all delay of -69 days , so i had given my report saying the project is being delayed by 69days, am i correct in this accept. if the consultant is going to ask iam thinking to show the reason of two clanders, but still iam not able to explane it properly and able to prepare my self.

can any any tell me am i correct

Actually I don’t like the concept of negative floats. I think that negative float means that there is no float or float is equal to zero. It corresponds with the definition - you cannot delay an activity without delaying project finish or violating time constraints.

Vladamir I agree with your point above

Dear Pranab Kumar Deb

I have some stuff on planning i can swap. My email is matedwards2002@yahoo.co.uk.

Thanks

Mat
ES, LS, EF and LF usually are calculated without considering resource constraints. If the float is defined as the number of days (hours, seconds) an activity can be delayed without delaying the whole project it means that all constraints are taken into consideration including resource, financial and supply constraints. So this float may be not equal to LS - ES. Sometimes we cal it resource-constrained float.
- Delay is Acceleration. So -260 days float means that we need to shorten the duration by 260 days to be on time.
Actually I don’t like the concept of negative floats. I think that negative float means that there is no float or float is equal to zero. It corresponds with the definition - you cannot delay an activity without delaying project finish or violating time constraints.

Hi Guys,

Be careful of this planning books.

I had a wonderful interview with super genius planner for a very high planning manager position.

Question: what is float?

My answer: Float is equal to LS - ES or LF - LF.

The genious was not satisfied. His expectation was the old way in defining float: The number of days that the project can be delayed without delaying the whole project.

Question: what if you have negative float. This happen when you constraints the project completion "must finish" and update the status of the project, generally the project is delay.

How can you imagine -260 days the project can be delayed without delaying the completion of the whole project.

Please advice!!

Cheers,

Charlie
