Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Changing the default calendar does not work

Hi

I have created a template which includes 2 calendars, a 5 day work week calendar and a 7 day work week calendar. The 5 day is the default, but when I make the 7 day calendar the default, future tasks entered do not use the 7 day one as the default, instead continuing to use the 5 day calendar.

The calendars were created using the wizard. I have tried copying the calendars into a project based on the blank template and they don't work as expected there. I have copied calendars from the Construction template to my template and they DO work as expected, so there is definitely something wrong with the calendars.

I would attached the template but I can't see this as being possible in this forum.

Any sugggestions!?

Thanks, Laurie

Hi Laurie

Glad I could be of some help.

The new inheritance "feature" was added after having been requested by quite a large number of users. This sort of request normally comes about either because a competitor product does a similar thing and people miss the behaviour or because people genuinely believe that the feature will aid their productivity. We normally add them in as optional behaviour because we don't want to upset anyone who is currently in the middle of a project.

The decision as to whether the option is switched on in the template projects is then taken by my colleagues who work in the customer-facing side of the business - in this case it was thought that inheriting calendars, code libraries etc would be useful for new users.

Unfortunately you appear to have been caught somewhere in the middle. Sorry about that.

Regards

Richard

Hi

Apologies for not responding before.

Mike - am using Advanced Level anyway.

Richard - that has fixed it, brilliant, thanks so much. What a strange setting. It does beg the question, why would you ever want to take property information like this based on surrounding tasks, effectively making this a random choice. I mean, what determines whether information is taken from nearby tasks or not. And why would this be set as a default (as it is with the Blank template)? Very dangerous and confusing.

Anyway, thanks again for helping!

Hi Laurie

The most likely cause of the different behaviour is a feature that was added into the software in Version 11. This feature is called "Inherit attributes from neighbouring task" and it is in the Tools – Options – Edit tab towards the top on the left. If it is switched ON then when you insert tasks they can inherit some settings - including the calendar - from their neghbouring tasks rather than from the defaults that are set for the overall project. <?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The behaviour in this area is described in the help – if you search for “inheritance” this will take you to the relevant help topic.

Regards

Richard

Hi Laurie

What user level are you on?

Check that you are not still on Beginner.

Go to Help > User Level > tick Advanced.

This opens up all the functions in the software.

If that is not it then you have flawed software - so go to the Asta support team and they will fix it.

Best regards
