Greetings,

First post, forgive me if this has been covered but atm the search function is down. I hope to make up for my questions with some answers to others.

I received a P3 backup file from a contractor and when I restore it all the files seem to be intact but P3 will not recognize it when trying to open. I tried the built in restore function, tried making it an exe file and restoring that way and even got the contractor to send me the files zipped and still I cant get it to open.

I have a feeling if I sat down at the contractor’s computer I could find something he did wrong in some setting... but am at a loss atm and dont want to keep asking for different version unless I can figure out for sure what the issue might be.

I did specifically ask he checked compress and remove access list, but basically it wont list the project in P3.

Also I tried a P6 import based on the P3 files and it will show the project but can not complete the import saying the file can not be opened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jared

Jared,

Restore the files to a folder on the desktop (or better still on the desktop). P3 will generate the 23 files (icons). Cut these files from the desktop and paste them in folder:::  C:\P3WIN\PROJECTS. The schedule will open up from here. The you may use the Tools - Project Utilties - Copy and create a copy of the schedule with destination folder:::  C:\P3WIN\PROJECTS\DISTRICT

Hope this works for you.

Restore&Opening File Issues

I am facing the same issue, except I am on the contractor's side.  Did you find a resolution to your problem of not being able to open P3 file after file restore?  Owner indicates they are able to restore, but cannot find the file to open after restore is completed.  Any help would be appreciated.

With my pc I wasn’t able to open the P3 files after unzip. PFXW didn’t work neither. It wasn’t able to locate the project.
With intention I displayed the contents of the pbackup-file. I hoped that you would read it and have an idea. You are much more experienced with P3.

The reason that PFXW cannot open file
C:\P3WIN\PROJECTS\DISTRICT\ZIP\DCR1DIR.P3
is because it is still in a zip folder (notice the “\ZIP\”?). You have to un-pack it first.

Even though your operating system allows programs to read the directory of a zip folder, it doesn’t mean that P3 and PFXW are able to open and read the files while they are in compressed mode. Un-zip them and try again. Good luck!

Thank you, I think I will need to try and talk the contractor through running the PFWX.exe tool on his file before zipping it for me.

I did make one on the route directory as well, also got your pm and sent that along for some assistance.

Each part of the path is 8 or less characters, and total is less than 64 characters so it should be fine. I have other files in that branch that open up fine.

I did trick the system to try to open them, even though it doesn’t show up on the file open menu. What I did is edit the p3.ini file to direct latest files to the locations, but it says "can not open project"

I might just need to visit the contractor, make a copy on his computer, run the corrupt file tool, then zip it up.

I assume, the path-name is too long (16-bit software). Create a directory c:\p3win\dcr1 and move your files to there. Then try to open.

Thank you for the ideas, I did get the search on here working and looked around more and still nothing.

If / when I get this resolved I will be sure to post the fix for others to see. My colleagues have had no luck either and the contractor submitting the schedule seems to be fine opening the schedule and checked he is running P3.1 SP3, has access for read/write to everyone, and checked off the box to remove access list during backup.

Also as I said he did also send the files clean just zipped up. The corrupt file tool from Primavera can see the project but says it can not open 90% of the individual files.

Sometimes I wonder if having a PC with an older version of windows would help for things like this... bad enough being held to a 16 bit OS with 3gb ram, cant imagine running an 8 bit one again lol.

Sorry if I expressed myself wrong. I meant: just rename this file, if it exists. Don’t take a new one.

If this doesn’t work it’s a good idea to wait for your colleague and try with a different pc. Or, if there is a chance, ask for a new file; yours might be corrupt.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input, I did try taking a "Users50.p3" file from another job folder and edit the text for this project.

However if you backup a project and select to remove access list it basically just skips that file and when you open it the first time P3 will make a new one.

Regardless I think it must be something a bit more sever, I am waiting on one of my colleagues to get back to me and see if it works on his machine.

One more assumption: It might be due to the access rights.

As far as I remember, if there is a file "USERS50.P3" just modify the name and try again.

Good luck!

I narrowed it down to the ****DIR.P3 file, as I could make a mock project and it would show up in the open list when I replaced all the other files but this one. Of course without the matching DIR file its useless but wanted to see where the error in opening is coming from.

Is there anyway to get into these files to see whats going on, or any ideas on how to request he backs it up differently so I can read the file?

Thanks, I dont think it had a target as it is the baseline schedule. Typically you can see the project on the list and remove or change targets before opening.

My issue is that the project is invisible on the open project list withing P3 but if you use windows explorer you can see the project files after the restore.

i’m not sure of this, but try to include the target project (if any) in the back-up, and restore it as well

To clarify, it doesnt have the ****AC2.p3 file and USERS50.p3 file, but fresh restores dont usually have them till you open it.
