Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Who knows how i can get my interproject relationship manager to work in a multi-user environment.. It appears to work only in a stand-alone workstation.. Any ideas? Thanks..

Futher to the earlier post on Interproject relationships, we are scheduling & levelling resources thru the InterProj quite well & getting desired outputs.
Only hassle is to define relationships one by one. Wonder if someone has developed a utility to automate the relationships.

Cheers

We have a situation where two projects are run concurrently on stand alone P3 with engineering resources more or less distinct, but the Job Card members are shared.
Initially we allocated resource limits as 50% each for the members which is tedious , time consuming & in accurate.
Now We are going for a third distinct plan for for the Job Card team with the Job Card resources, using Interproject relationships for getting the Drawings/Document completion dates & then levelling the Job Card resource in the Third Plan. There is a difference of data date by 1 day (Saturday/Sunday) which does not make any difference.
& scheduling in sequential order to get an accurate scenario.

But yes, we are waiting for P6 to be "Officially" purchased & used.

The interproject relationships are stored in a seperate file and updated each time according to the advanced scheduling options. They act as a constraint on the activity in the current schedule. This is also option based.

If your data dates are different then either the activity in the current schedule has started (therefore constraint gets overridden) or not started in which case the inter-project constraint is applied. The constraint date is calculated based on the different data date and progress on the predecessors in the other project group.

Frank,

Thanks for your comment. Following your example, what impact would it have if the data date for the design program is different from that for the possession program? for e.g. data date for design schedule is monday, and data date for possession schedule is sunday. will impact the possesion schedule? Thanks.

A word of caution if you use Interproject relationships.

You must attempt to keep all interproject relationships going the same direction otherwise you will need to reschedule the Project Groups (the relationships are between activities in Project Groups) in sequence to get the correct result.

IMHO the ONLY valid use for Interproject Relationships is when you have the need to have different planning units ie. the design and leadup to a rail possession occurs in days and the execution of the possession is in hours. The interproject relationships in this example then tends to be in the same direction ie from the design program to the possession.

HTH
