Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Dear Friends

I am facing a problem in P6. When I select Started & Finished Box in Status Window. The Early Start & Early Finish Dates automatically change to the Data date. Due to this problem I cannot show the Activity % complete in the Gantt Chart.

Please help me Find the answer.

Thank You

Qutub

Qutub,

I believe that the solution that you are looking for is to not look at the Early Start column but to use the Start column.  The “Start” column will show you the early start date before the activity actually starts and then the actual start date after you mark it as having started (just like P3 does.)  The actual start date will have the letter “A” after it to indicate that this is the actual date and not the early date.  Also use the Finish column instead of the early finish column.  Good luck!

Maybe this is how P6 early dates are intended to work, they have a reason although at times they do not tell most probably is valid.

Although not a P6 user at times got to analyze P6 schedules supplied by others, from the pdf manual I found the following

Early Start

The earliest possible date the remaining work for the activity can begin. This date is calculated by the project scheduler based on activity relationships, schedule constraints, and resource availability.

Ron Winter have an excellent paper regarding P6 dates, look for it, there are even dates for Remaining Early Start, kind of confusing as the prior definition for early start also makes reference to resource availability. Ron Winter paper makes it clear.

I have no problem as long as it is clear on their manual and there are no inconsistencies, ... well got RW paper which I find of great value.

Mr. Ronald,

Yes, you have understood my problem.

1- I  checked the Actual Start box but did not checked the Actual Finish box, then when I enter a physical % or Duration % then also the Activity % completed is not Updated as I require.

2- After Checking the Actual Start date When I Schedule the Activities All the Early start dates change to Data date.

What is the Solution?

Qutub,

Perhaps it you tried to explain your problem more thoroughly, then we would understand your issue better.  Are you saying that you checked both the Actual Start box and the Actual Finish box for a particular activity?  If the activity has finished, then there is no other status possible than 100% complete.  You many indicate a different percent complete only if you checked the Actual Start box but have not checked the Actual Finish box.

I recommend that you read the manual that comes with P6. It is available as a PDF file in the Documents Folder if you downloaded the software.   Otherwise, Paul Harris has a really good book on Using P6 that you may want to purchase. Good luck!
