(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?
(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

I have an activity showing a cost variance in the variance column even though that activity does not have a budgeted total cost.
Please help, it has to be a setting issue i think....

if it has a variance it must be comparing against something do you have a baseline attached ?
see if there is an actual cost or a cost to complete ?
if there are values here it will still show a variance
look at previous period costs
