Microsoft does not maintain the MPX file format since MSP 2000; to "export" a project plan, use the File, Save As command and save a MS Excel file.
If you have a valid serial number, you will be able to download from www.primavera.com a bunch of MS Excel files that make it easier to migrate plans from MSP to P3.
Look carefully at the scheduling options, that are pretty different from one app to the other
