Area Planning Manager, Bam Nuttall Limited, BAM Rail Souith Business Unit

START Date:
September, 1971

After working for consultant civil engineering companies for eighteen years as a civil design and / or resident engineer, both in England and abroad (Kenya, Kuwait, and Hong Kong), I decided on his return to England in early 1989 on a change of direction in his engineering career.

I became Chief Engineer for Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd on a large management contract in central London, where over 100 contractors were employed to build a complex office block on anti-vibration bearings over the South end of Victoria Station. By the end of this project the 1980s building boom in London had ended, and Graham transferred to the Sir Robert McAlpine civils tendering office in Hemel Hempstead, and began his planning career, initially on highway project tenders This introduced him to computer aided planning and to the Power Project software package.

In 1997 I became the project planning engineer on the Croydon Tramlink project and began using the Primavera P3 software package. I continued to use this when I joined Balfour Beatty as a tender planning engineer in their international business in early 1999, and then in January 2000 as the planning engineer on the £50m Willesden Re-Signalling project (part of the West Coast Main Line).

I joined Edmund Nuttall Ltd in June 2001, as the planning manager for the Construction Partnership, a framework set up for initially five years between Nuttall and Network Rail. Originally I had one planning engineer to assist with the workload, but as the Partnership grew, my responsibilities developed to include the possession planning and management teams. By the end of the then Framework Agreement with Network Rail in March 2011, my staff included three planning engineers, a possession planner, a possession assurance manager, and a RIMINI planner.

Nuttalls, re-named as BAM Nuttall Limited moved their Rail South business unit offices to Edenbridge, timed to coincide with the end of the Framework; and on my 10th anniversary with the company, I was appointed as the Area Planning Manager for this business unit.

My current responsibilities currently include the ongoing Bridge 6 reconstruction project in Battersea, South London, and also the recently won East Croydon Station ‘Footbridge’ project.
