Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hi all,

Im aware this is going to sound like a really stupid question - probably beaciuse it is - but I dont know the answer so here goes!

I have started working for a new company where they want me to create a resource profile for all projects. The project planners currently resource schedules to different levels. Some not at all, some are resources only wioth Engineering resources and some are fully resourced. As a quick fix they want tme to create a tool to illustrate where they need resources in the future (from bid schedules) and where they have shortfalls in current projects.

To do this my plan was to recreate the project schedules in my plan (probably at lowest level of WBS) then alloctae the appropriate resources - obviously in future the ideal will be to have all schedules fully resourced but I think thats a long way off just now!

My question is this - there is a huge resource dictionary already present in the database I have access to, which is also being used by the project planners. If I were to use this resource dictionary, I assume I would affect the project schedules as I would be duplicating effort on some resources, hence it would look like that particular resource was 150% allocated, rather than 75%. I hope this makes sense!

Is there a way of having more than one resource dictionary in one database and locking it so it can only be used by me? Or can anyone suggest a simple way of doing this? Maybe I should be using roles? Basically what Im trying to say is Im not sure how to do it so that I dont affect anyone elses schedules!

Should I maybe be in a totally different database as Im trying to do something that is initially (rightly or wrongly) a stand alone process?

ANY help would be hugely appreciated!!

Thanks

Thanks Mike, Can I create this separate resource dictionary in the same database as the one that is already there and being used by other planners? Is there a way of making it "mine" or hiding it so others cannot use it?

Hi Jane

I would suggest that you start from scratch and set up a resource database on Excell which can then be imported when it is complete and approved.

You also need to identify which are the lead resources for duration modelling and which are just passive allocations.
