Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

resourcing with quantities (weighted to provide accurate PvA %)

Basically I am trying to figure out how I go about resource loading a project with quantities (lets say strip/render/paint to keepit simple) so that I can get an accurate planned vs actual % from it.

Lets say I have 3 rooms to decorate in this project, and each room will be a single activity bar (i have reasons for this).  Each room will have strip, render and paint and I have a quantity for each one in each room.  Now I cannot just add 3 resources to each bar with the 3 quantities on it because the weighting of those quantities may be different in each room regardless of the quantity, for example:

Room 1

10m2 strip (worth 33% of this room)

10m2 render (worth 33% of this room)

10m2 paint (worth 33% of this room)

Room 2

10m2 strip (worth 50% of this room)

10m2 render (worth 20% of this room)

10m2 paint (worth 30% of this room)

Room 3

50m2 strip (worth 30% of this room)

30m2 render (worth 50% of this room)

70m2 paint (worth 20% of this room)

As you can see from the first 2 rooms, same quantities, same resources, but different weighting for each due to different conditions in the room (therefore the % complete is not based purely on XXm2 completed, it needs to be XXm2*the weighting for that particular resource in that particular room).  Now I could use activity steps but this does not allow me to enter quantities or run reports on planned vs actual quantity in that room, and total planned vs actual quantity over all 3 rooms, which I could do if I can set this up using resources.  Note I cant just set up dozens of resources, I need strip, paint and render resources and the ability to adjust each assignments weighting vs the others within that room).  There may also be occasions where there is no strip, only paint and render so I could not assign the strip resource to that room.

I am sure this MUST be possible, I just dont know what type of resource to use or how to set it up so I can have an adjustable weighting which i can change based on each room, what I cannot change is the quantity as I need to run reports on those numbers.  It would also be good if I can do this without using any monetary value as I have other resources to contain the costs and dont want the quantity resources messing up the overall project costs.

note: I am not actually decorating rooms, I have simplified the example to demonstrate the concept of what I am trying to do.

thanks

Hi John

The only other way to do it is  to break up your multi trade tasks into sub tasks - for instance if you have a slab of concrete and one bar holding formwork - rebar - joints and pouring then break it down into one bar per trade resource - link them FS and summarise for the whole task. You can then add plant such as pumps or pokers to the summary.

Thanks, unfortunately that wont solve it, the actuals I get which I will need to plug in will be in those quantities not hours and I will need to run reports to pull off the planned vs actual of each type of resource both for the project overall and for each 'room' so merging them into a single resource is not an option.

I thought I may be able to put the quantity onto a resource and somehow adjust the units/time or similar setting to get the desired effect of one resource having a higher weight than another for overall % complete.

I will be using 'bucket planning' in P6 to set the quantity to be done each week on each resource and this will come from excel (where it is also weighted).

It might be that its just not possible to do it but that seems odd, I am basically tracking physical % complete (not manhours!) by weighting quantities planned and completed.  Seems like this would be a very common thing to need to do!

Hi John

Convert the quantites to resource labour hours and assign a single resource called hours to all the activities.

If you do not have a price breakdown showing the labour content then use a reasonable percentage to find the labour value and divide by the hourly rate.

There will be no need for weighting and even if your conversion is a bit out it will be proprtional.
