Removing Links to the Update Programm
Good Day Sir/Ma'am
I am currently working in a MEP company, I would just want to ask if it is contractually or necessary to remove links from the update programme? because when i'm updating i only update the MEP not include civil activities, the problem is some of my activities which predecessor are civil activities is pusshing my start and finish date. so the planner of the civil or main contractor instructed me to remove the links. can anyone help me to deal with this??
Thanks in advance.

Hello Paul,Always keep the
Hello Paul,
Always keep the Contracts with you. There you can see the Scheduling Specification/ Scheduling requiments..a well crafted scheduling specs includes the provision for revision of the master programme (approved baseline programme) - a carefully crafted scheduling specification should,if carefully followed make identification of actual delay issues, and the events they relate to, much simpler..soon you will not just exposed to logic changing but claims as well.
I believe you are a subcontractor (MEP) - kindly correct me if not. You have to coordinate it to your main contractor (I agree with our colleague's comments above). Usually, it is written in the provision not to change esp the logic (links). But in the construction world w/c is subject to uncertainties (risks) it is logical & realistic to change the baseline if is not applicable - the baseline purpose was a map to put us on the right track. A guide, we should always put that in mind. If its purpose is not meet, why use it for mapping it will be misleading (my opinion)- update is just a copy of ur baseline, with your figures (activity % complete, actual dates, etc). But you need to coordinate it first to the stakeholders (in your case, your immediate superior, the main contractor, the consultant & the consultant to the Owner). I am in the Consultant side, I usually do a claim digger. I do compare, once I've seen that the contractor have changed the logic, I will inform them, why such action is required?.
A good planner as they say (the planning veterans) usually knows the legal issues in related to planning. You will definitely use the baseline & the as built schedule (updated w/c you are planning to change the logic ) for claims soon. Better to begin with the end in mind.
I'm still a work in progress. Hope I have imparted some simple tidbits of info & help you in a way.
Cheers!

Hi Joseph,
As they say below, it is not allowed to modify the approved document unless authorized as required by contract.
First obtain the latest updated schedule from the main contractor. In the same schedule you will have to input your updates.
Suggests that you will provide the main contracor with your updates and let them input the data you provided with their schedule.
Kindly clear to me that when you say "updating" ... you input the actual dates and necessary percentage of completion?
If this is the case then there is an out of sequence activities if you say that start and finish dates is push by other activities upon updating.

Raymund

Hi Glenn,
thank you for the Information, I also Inquire to my Senior Coleague (Albert), same answer they gave me, they told me that only we can do with the contract programme is to chage the %complete, Actual Dates, Actual Cost, rather than that if i removing or changing any links it will be considered as i revised programme.
Thank you for the help, (14344)

Paul,
Usually if your work will begin after the completion of works by others, that completion date will be indicated as milestone date so it will only push your activity once the other contractor didn't achieve that completion date.
Removing Links
Hi Joseph,
I have read your inquiry regarding the links removal from the update programme. Based on my limited experience as a planning engineer, no main contractor or consultant or client in his right mind will instruct the removal of links in a programme, this is completely against any contract, if you remove/add or do anything in any approve programme there should be a written instruction and there will be contractual issues, I guess its best for you to ask the genius planner of your contractor to give you written instruction to remove the links of civil, although my teacher always tells me to update civil and mep (TOGETHER ) everytime I update a programme.
Hope this helps, (HTH,HHWW)
