4D/BIM based scheduling techniques in the construction industry
Dear Group members,
I am writing to ask if you would be prepared to assist me with my research. I am looking for participants to complete the attached questionnaire, who are currently employed within the construction industry and who either:
- have an experience in using 4D/BIM based scheduling approach;
- or was involved in projects where 4D modeling have been used.
I am currently undertaking a Master of Science Degree in Construction Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. In fulfillment of this degree I am required to research a topic area and produce a dissertation. The topic I have chosen is ‘4D/BIM based scheduling techniques in the construction industry’.
The primary aim of this research is to highlight limitations and implementation barriers of 4D/BIM based scheduling approach in the construction industry. I would be most grateful if you could have a look at my questionnaire that would take approximately 10-15 minutes.
Also, I would be most grateful, if you could send this link to your colleagues, who also experienced in 4D modelling. Please click on the link below or copy it into your web browser to complete the survey.

Thank you for your time.

BIM
Hi Zsolt,
Thanks for explanation, now it's more clear.
You've mentioned some sofware that able to generate schedules out of 3D BIM Models. Did you mean Vico Office? As it is the only one software I know that can do it. Also, it has a very useful feature called Location Based Management (LBM), where you can separate your model into several parts that would create more useful 4D Models.
I think LBM will be also useful for Synchro and Navisworks.
However, one of the new things that will be added to the new version of Navisworks '2014' is quantification, so now we can link our quantities from BIM Models to the schedules. Here is the link to the source:

QTY Take-Off - Back to the origin
Hi Talgat,
I think I was not clear when I wrote my previous comment: I think the process is like this:
The two processes can be ran parallel - by different teams - with a possible merge at the end.
Hope it is more clear now,
Zsolt
QTY from BIM Model
QTY from BIM Model
QTY from BIM Model
QTY TakeOff from BIM Model
Hi Talgat,
Sorry for the late reply.
I have read your comment. Here is what I think: for me QTY TakeOff is part of the 5D part of BIM, which is the cost management by BIM. What I mean here is that the model is loaded into a specialized software where QTY and (if exist) material type information can be extracted. Once the extraction is done, this information can be connected with the prices stored in the procurement system to be able to estimate the budget.
Of course, this will only give the material (temporary materials and special tools) and not the cost of manpower required to complete the job. That should come from the schedule. For example in P6 you can define material, labour or non-labour type of resources (connected with production rates and cost). In an ideal case, the scheduling application should be able to pick up information from the 5D system allowing the planner to link material and tool related cost items to schedule activities.
Well, I am not sure that this is really working, the tool I am using does not do it, not yet.
Hope it helps,
Zsolt
4D Model of Industrial Building
Hi all,
I have just created 4D Model of Industrial Building in Navisworks Manage 2013. It's the first try, through, so don't be so strict. I could have added more detail if it was real project.
10 days of training with tutorials (Revit and Navisworks) + 3 days of modelling in Revit (very fast, comparing with AutoCAD) + 0.5 days CPM Schedule, to create logical sequence (MS Project 2010) + 2 days of Linking in Navisworks = 4D Model.

Thanks
Dear Zsolt,
Thank you very much for your participation.
Regarding your question in the survey:
depends on what you mean by BIM, the process or the model itself?
by BIM I meant the model and how it could assist the creation of 4D model. For example, material quantity takeoffs from BIM model and linkage with the schedule directly.

Done
Dear Talgat,
Just completed it. Good luck with your research.
